I think the farming yield boosts you unlock with exp increase the amount of meat you get when you kill them and you can't buy the meat anymore so the farm animals are a long term thing.
There is a large start-up cost because of the cost of building the barn / henhouse, but once you have the buildings, if you get a forage table so you can make your own animal feed and raise an animal to max growth before slaughtering it, it is a better deal than buying meat.
When I read that the animals can get sick I really didn't want to deal with that or killing off animals I had raised up. :( I don't mind keeping chickens for eggs or cows for milk, but I'd prefer to just buy the meat.
Btw it would be nice if someone could nail her to the counter so she does not run around all day long whenever i need something asap.
It is really getting on my nerves when that happens, an option to buy at the counter even if she is not behind it would also be ok for me :P.
