How do you split a stack of items

I want to put a few logs onto the fire, not my whole stack, how do you split up items?

If you left click the log it'll add just one to the container. Shift-clicking will add one to your mouse. Shift-dragging will split the stack.

What about on a controller?

On the steam deck using left trigger and manually tapping on the item split one into my inventory from a box. Haven't been able to replicate it without using manual touch.
