Well since there is no Skill system in this game...i would say you either have to cook a specific amount of broth or its maybe buggy?

According to the "cooking" help entry, adjusting the temperature (using the +/- symbols) before starting cooking can result in better outcomes. So far I haven't found a setting that results in "delicious broth" as required by the quest....

after cooking my things disappear — I have them nowhere — not with me, not in the pantry

Either you picked it too soon, text was not yet green. Or you were late and food burned and text was red.

Good idea with cooking is to balance how long fire burns to cooking time of food. Steak, mash, ham etc take long time to burn after finished so having fire last 5-10minute longer than cooking time of food and filling all burners with same food lets you leave do something else and return to finished but not burnt food.

Specially mash takes ages so no point waiting.

Eggs cook too fast for it.
