Chapter One è l'evoluzione del grande Sherlock per la nuova generazione.

Seguo la Frogwares da "Il Risveglio" e ho rigiocato più volte i titoli della serie su Sherlock Holmes. Negli anni hanno imparato e sviluppato nuove tecniche e gameplay per mettere sempre qualcosa di nuovo senza rifare sempre lo stesso videogioco, cambiando solo la trama.

Chapter One è un degno successore di The Testament per la narrativa e un ottimo risultato dopo gli esperimenti in Crimes & Punishmets e Devil's Daughter per le meccaniche, dando il giusto contesto alle parti d'azione. Questi progressi rendono il gioco accessibile ai "nuovi" ed entusiasmante per i "vecchi".

Hanno curato particolarmente la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e una messa in scena cinematografica che ci permette di immedesimarci ed indagare con loro, come un terzo fratello.
C'è tanta tanta ironia e qualche gag divertente che rendono l'atmosfera più giocosa e leggera per poi colpirti al cuore nei momenti importanti.

La Mappa è grande e ben curata nei dettagli dei vari quartieri e misture culturali, la colonna sonora incornicia il titolo in modo decisivo, cosa che non era riuscita con i titoli precedenti. La durata di gioco è decisamente superiore, The Testament non superava le 7 ore totali, mentre Chapter One, contando su molte quest secondarie che danno piccoli indizi e aggiunte alla storia può superare le 30 ore.

Come tecnica e arte hanno raggiunto un ottimo risultato per essere un team di 80 persone.
Chi si lamenta della qualità tecnica non si rende conto che lo mette a confronto con titoli che possono contare migliaia di sviluppatori e un budget molto più alto.

Può un gioco che si basa su di un personaggio letterario di metà 1800 essere godibile arrivato all'ennesima reincarnazione videoludica senza annoiare? La risposta a mio avviso è assolutamente e categoricamente sì!

For fans of Sherlock Holmes or detective games, Chapter One offers enough mysteries to whet the appetite of any aspiring sleuths. It does falter with its poorly designed combat and a lackluster open world, but overall, it bears the soul of the greatest consulting detective ever, and I can’t wait for the next game.

Set in the Mediterranean island of Cordona, a 21-year-old Sherlock Holmes finds himself back in his hometown in the search for answers in regards to the death of his mother, Violet Holmes. Accompanied by a childhood friend, Jon, the two travel all over the island, meeting dubious people and solving mysteries that can link him to the truth he has been looking for all this time.

My thoughts
Chapter one wields the spirit of Sherlock Holmes proudly, and I am greatly pleased with the dissection of his character and callbacks from the novels. I had to hold myself back from squealing when I saw a reenactment of a certain scene from the books, and I wanted more of that. I was also a little apprehensive with the new Jon since I am so used to the Holmes and Watson dynamic, but the more I played, his relationship with Sherlock made sense once you figured out who he is.

Both main and side-quests were a delightful experience, filled with twists and dark turns. Some quests force you to make compromises and decide which outcomes are the lesser of two evils. Whatever the case may be, you can find the consequences of your actions on the front page of the Cordona papers. There are a couple of conclusions per main/side quest, however, the decisions you make don’t play a role in the overall story arc, and it is a letdown because I would love to see it manifest or alluded to during the story progression.

Sherlock is no fighter
For lack of better words, the combat is downright atrocious. In the novels, Sherlock has skills as a boxer and is quite adept at swordplay. In this game, he only has his pistol at hand and a snuff box that can temporarily blind his enemies. I would have been able to forgive that since we are playing as a younger Sherlock and perhaps he hasn’t learned those abilities just yet, but it doesn’t excuse just how repetitive the combat is.

Each battle is waved-based, and the next battle is triggered right away until you’ve defeated them all. Littered across the field are objects Sherlock can shoot to disable an assailant’s movement. Holmes can roll dodge out of harm’s way and use a “bullet time” ability, slowing the world around him temporarily. Shooting is clunky, requiring you to target areas on the enemy’s body, like an armor piece, to reveal a weak spot and arrest them via a quick time event. For example, if there is a light bulb above an enemy, the detective can shoot it, rendering that person open to an arrest. There are no upgrades to the pistols, or skills to learn, which makes combat pointless. It would have been great if Sherlock had other tools in his repertoire like a cane, but alas this is absent. The Consulting Detective
With Sherlock’s penchant for solving mysteries, eccentric and often strange people will find themselves in his orbit, usually with a case or two for him to solve. Whether he is employed by the Cordona’s local constabulary or a flamboyant artist, the detective turns no one down in his quest for the truth. You are never really given the exact location of a quest, and you have to ask the locals or sniff around the police archives for relevant information. I do like this investigative nature, and it makes you feel like you’re in the shoes of a great sleuth.

Sherlock can also deduce certain events based on the evidence found, and choosing the correct sequences will lead to the next part of the investigation. Sometimes, he must close off his senses to all external stimuli so he can pinpoint a clue that could be hiding in plain sight, and I love how his perceptive eye is showcased by making everything around him a dull, blue color, so the player can perceive whatever he has detected more easily. Master of Disguise
Sherlock has the face where he can blend into any situation and dress up as someone else to get a suspect or witness talking or get inside a holding cell as a copper, for example. This subterfuge skill is something we see Holmes do in the canon, and I appreciate how it was implemented in the game. I do hope this is more elaborated in the next chapter because more quests needed to be centered around this aspect. A Disappointing Open World
I was ecstatic when it was announced there would be an open-world Sherlock Holmes game. It is an ambitious goal, and I was hoping it would be executed properly, but alas it isn’t as dynamic as I wanted it to be. Side quests can pop up while exploring or if Jon spots something interesting, but that’s it. There are no random events or extra activities to do, so even if the streets of Cordona seemed alive, it felt hollow since the game doesn’t encourage exploration. It felt like I was just running from point A to B. There were certain parts where Sherlock is running around, and he remembers a lost memory from his childhood. I wanted more deep dives like that, and it would incentivize players to take a tour of his hometown.

The island of Cordona is beautifully designed, and the structures of the five regions within the island are a pleasant sight to see. This is the best-looking Sherlock game ever, but it is riddled with performance issues, especially while traversing through the open world. I also discovered bugs during certain missions where it won’t continue to the next objective, but it does correct itself during a reload.

I finished at around the 60-hour mark, but the casual player would most likely complete it around 30 hours or so. If you’re looking for a good detective game, this can scratch that itch. It is just so unfortunate that the combat is terrible because Sherlock can be a versatile fighter. If Frogware can iron out the problems mentioned here, I believe the next game will be awesome because you can see what they were going for by making it an open world, but it just wasn’t fleshed out in the finished product.

Non lascio quasi mai una recensione ma per questo gioco faccio un'eccezione. Sono un fan della saga e della Frogwares. Ho giocato moltissimi dei titoli di Sherlock Holmes di questa casa di produzione, oltre a Sinking city. Ho letteralmente amato sinking city per l'ambientazione lovecraftiana e l'atmosfera, mentre il mio preferito tra i titolo di Sherlock è stato Crimes and punishment. Questo titolo come gli altri mi è piaciuto tantissimo e spero non sia l'ultimo della saga. I casi son intriganti, i personaggi son ben caratterizzati e la città di Cordona è un ottimo setting. I principali difetti sono 2: il pessimo combat system è il primo, il secondo riguarda solo chi ha giocato Sinking city in quanto l'80% delle meccaniche di gioco è preso direttamente dal titolo precedente. Non è un male chiariamolo però per la saga di Sherlock mi sarei aspettato qualcosa in più. Se siete fan di Sherlock Holmes questo gioco non vi deluderà di certo.

L'approccio open world risulta a tratti superfluo ma l'avventura è ricca, solida e convincente, sebbene molto guidata. Ottimo il duo di protagonisti, credibile e affiatato.

Una godibile avventura di Sherlock Holmes.


Totale assenza di puzzle. Nei titoli precedenti siamo stati abituati a dover risolvere dei rompicapi per poter andare avanti nel gioco. In questo titolo i rompicapi mancano del tutto, andando a perdere una parte (secondo me) essenziale che accomuna tutti i giochi di Sherlock.

Pochissima libertà. Il fatto che il gioco sia un open world potrebbe portarci a pensare che sia un gioco un po' più "libero" rispetto ai titoli precedenti che invece presentavano una struttura lineare su binari. Possiamo si andare in giro per la mappa (in free roaming) ma non troveremo nessun tipo di interazione, né con oggetti, né con npc, rendendolo di fatto giocabile solo quando si segue un caso. Anche i casi non sono "liberi"; bisogna infatti fare quello che il gioco si aspetta che noi facciamo. Non siamo liberi di esplorare dove ci pare oppure di decidere quali oggetti costituiscono prova e quali no.

I travestimenti. Su carta il doversi travestire per poter ottenere delle informazioni che altrimenti non potremmo mai ottenere non è male. Ad esempio per poterci far dare delle informazioni da un poliziotto potrebbe esserci richiesto di vestirci come tale. Prendiamo ora un altro esempio: immaginiamoci di non sapere chi ha una data informazione e l'unico indizio che ci viene fornito è una zona. Se nella zona ci sono ad esempio: un marinaio, un poliziotto, un povero, un ricco ed un lavoratore, ci dovremmo vestire da ciascuno di loro per poterci parlare e FORSE ottenere delle informazioni, rendendo questa meccanica estremamente frustrante.

Le fasi di azione. L'azione del gioco può essere riassunta in: arrivi in una zona e compaiono dei nemici armati. I nemici sono sempre gli stessi: quello che ti lancia il coltello, quello che ti spara con una pistola e quello che ti spara con la doppietta. A questo punto potete decidere se ucciderli oppure se arrestarli. Per arrestarli dovrete metterli ko sparando a dei "punti deboli" come un berretto che porterà loro a spaventarsi, un tubo che farà uscire del vapore e bloccherà la vista del bandito, oppure... SPARARE AD UNA BOTTIGLIA CHE IL BANDITO HA APPICCICATO AL PETTO. Perché? Qual è il senso? Oltre a questo, la meccanica risulta monotona e noiosa.


I casi. Il core del gioco funziona alla grande. I casi sono bellissimi da seguire e da risolvere, intricati e per nulla scontati. Sia i casi principali che quelli secondari sono estremamente coinvolgenti e ricchi di dettagli. Si può notare un impegno non indifferente da parte degli sviluppatori.


I difetti che ho elencato riguardano una misera porzione del gioco, rendendo l'unico pregio (degno di nota) preponderante nella valutazione. È sicuramente un titolo che ha qualcosa da raccontare, per questo lo consiglio a chi è amante delle avventure grafiche, dei gialli e di Sherlock Holmes.

Storia avvincente e scorrevole, gameplay a volte un po' macchinoso. Ad ogni modo, come ogni Sherlock Holmes, ne vale la pena. Consigliato!

Mi è piaciuto il gioco. Bello, ho giocato i precedenti della stessa casa, sicuramente sono migliorate molte cose. Però quello che mi dispiace è che hanno reso il gioco troppo veloce, mentre nel precedente c'erano magari 5 casi, ma ben sviluppati che ti facevano pensare, qui ce ne sono almeno 20, ma si completano troppo in fretta. Molti non sono nemmeno casi, ma semplice gironzolare ascoltando una bella storia.
L'idea della mappa aperta è carina, ma rischia di essere troppo dispersiva, passi più tempo a camminare che a fare cose.
