The French word you're thinking of is "Chéri" meaning dear or darling, however as a French person not once did it sound like he was pronouncing a French word.

In the novel, Hound of the Baskerville, Holmes is "missing"for part of the story,
In the comedy version of the 'Hound of the Baskervilles', he was missing because he went home to see his mother. And he did complain to her, "Don't call me Shirl, Mum."
Either that or I just unwittingly revealed a major plot twist. In which case, oops!
