Here is how I started the ones that have been released thus far (I am assuming it will be the same locations but cannot be 100% sure):
  • Lead Zeppelin:
Look through the telescope at the north-west corner of Old City east of the Old City Bridge. It can be accessed by going onto the ramparts slightly north-west of the Observation Point fast travel point. I think this is accessible as soon as you can explore the open world; however, I think this was a preorder bonus, so it probably is not be accessible to everyone at this point. Update: Was informed that this is now free for everyone to download, apologies for the confusion.
  • Saints & Sinners:
Eavesdrop on two people talking in Miner's End at the intersection of Silver Way and Herring Road almost exactly between the Northern Miner's End fast travel point and the Northern Silverton fast travel point. To start you have to have completed the main story case 'A Gilded Cage'.
  • Beyond a Joke:
Eavesdrop of two people talking under the bridge on Baskerville Road, a little north of Silent Way (near the Church of St. Nicholas fast travel point). Like with Saints & Sinners, you first have to finish the main story case 'A Gilded Cage'.
  • Mycroft’s Pride: (released 21 January 2022)
This DLC includes the following three cases and one extra mission:
    1. The Rugged Informant:
Can be started by picking up a postcard in the postbox at Stonewood Manor. The main story case 'A Gilded Cage' and the side case 'Love, Death, and Cordona' need to be finished before you can start this one.
    2. A Rat on a Boat:
Just like the previous case, this case is started by picking up a postcard from the mail at Stonewood Manor. 'A Gilded Cage', 'Love, Death, and Cordona', and 'The Rugged Informant' need to be finished first.
    3. Gone Girl:
Same song, third verse. Started by picking up a postcard from the mailbox at Stonewood Manor. Requires having finished 'A Gilded Cage', 'Love, Death, and Cordona', 'The Rugged Informant', and 'A Rat on a Boat' before you can start.
    4. In For A Penny...:
Can be started by looking at the coin collection of the reading room (the one with the fireplace) on the second floor. I am not 100% but I am assuming that you probably need to have 'A Gilded Cage' finished before starting this one.
  • M for Mystery:
    DLC not released yet.
Hope this helps!

The whole preorder bonus set with Lead Zeppelin is now free on Steam so it is available to everyone.

Thanks. Didn't know about Zeppelin.
I meant: It's strange that you need to google how and where to start these new quests.
If I already complete main story and sub-quests - I will not found this quests accidentaly while I play the game.

I certainly will have found all this quests while I play the game. Because thats what I did.
I done with the story before dlc was released, so...

Not released yet means quests are not in the game or guides are not finished here?

Try to read again.
I load the game and what? How I need to know where new quests starts? Except by searching community or internet?
DLC indormation must contain "Where to..", or map marker at least.
I'm glad for you if you done with dlc quests while you followed the main story.
But the game is not about searchings the cases, it's about searchings the solutions for the cases.
But not the point. I done with it. Most lazy DLC ever I seen. Except "Joke" maybe. But meanless quest too.
I didn't ask where I can find quest. I am talking about respectless dlc integration. That's all.

Yep, thats a Studio thats doing the marketing via third consultant on the left. Just dont get so miffed about it, imho... Calling the game Chapter one (episodic content conotations) and inviting in all new kinds of people that cant read, or extract meaning from symbolism (icons), via a fighting system that punishes people that are bad at it (probably half of all the COD dudebros), or understanding videogames (you know no game can generate dialog options for 7000 people, right?), by even dumbing down the plot threads, that got them good press with Crimes and Punishments, certainly wasnt the best decision, nevertheless, what is there - is brilliant enough, to warrant some goodwill (some sidequests, overall story, (not quest story), open world that is astonishingly beautiful (but empty), and class A dialogue design) -- still cost them goodwill, because the compromises made (and they are good ones), correlated with too many people not being able to play the game without feeling stupid, because they didnt find the handholding, for a lack of reading, and not understanding game systems... So its now the people that were unable to play it, that feel cheated, and lower the games reputation... Even through professional reviews. Because everyones an influencer now.

Every dudebro review I read has a quarrel in there, thats objectively just not true, but the reviewer would swear on it. :)

Talking about systems -- getting sidequests is done by just exploring the open world a bit. Game should dynamically (?) drop in people talking about sidequests as mission starters for you. People who got the DLC pass up front noticed that during gameplay, most of the people that would buy it afterwards would also have noticed that by having played the game a bunch.

Making preorder DLC "not beefy at all" is actually a good thing (Its when you are hiding bigger contentpacks behind it, that it becomes more problematic), but then the studio at least needs to notice that upfront and market the DLC as a freebie. Thats well understood since CDPR did it, and they did it (horray for them, leads more people into the dlc infrastructure, and produces goodwill), just too late (Airship DLC free now) and in your case it lead to being disappointed. That said, case design wasnt the strong point of this game. And two out of the three DLCs released almost underlined that problem more.

Can someone in the Studio do a meeting on what the Airship DLC was? Because you have the one thing thats always in the players vision throughout the game, where their immagination goes to and that would actually make them want to play something based on that thing - and then you do what with it?

In closing, now that this game has kind of flopped (no buzz, mostly - and if so, its a dudebro complaining) (even though we get a different message from the studio, this also doesnt bode well for the season pass holders. :)

Put some efforts in into the final DLC released (at least story wise), if the money/goodwill is there for that - leave people on a highnote.. :) And learn from mistakes. This is far from a bad game. Bank on discovery - the right audiences should discover it.

But it aimed for much more mainly to get out of the (smartypants) adventure niche - and this is not how you do it.

Clicked into another stream today - saw another player talking to random 7000ish citizens on the street, this time with the correct clue pinned that told him to use Sherlock Vision instead. For most people this was systems overload. For people that had played the series before this was "phoning in case design" by "regardless of what decision you make, you should feel good/rewarded in the end" which just felt dumb.

At the same time I'm almost worried, if I push for them to put more agency into the players hands, because literally every time I tuned into twitch I saw someone fundamentaly failing to grasp systems. Again to the point, where most of their time was spent talking to random 7000 citizens of cordona...

And this started from the point, where Frogwares found a way to make "pixelhunting" easier for most people, and still rewarding - by introducing systems, that lead you to the clues, and then making sure you couldnt miss any. In this game, people fail to understand one mechanig, and they will tell you - "you can only play it with guide", and the rest of us, that still can read, and understand iconography will complain about the game being handholdy AF, because everything was spelled out in text.

Design tip: Some of the reviews I read mentioned to group clues with active icons at the beginning of the clues list. So people stumble over them more often. There is something to that. While people who know the games, will read clues more attentively, because they know that the game is about not accusing the wrong person, new players to the series dont know that. And after Chapter one this isnt even true anymore (do whatever, get reward plot design language), the rest is entirely unfamiliar with clues being presented to them in text form and not as glowies, they'd run after.

This thread is another example for that (If I'm correct and people talking about new cases are pseudo randomly generated, while you are running through the city), they want them so badly.

I even thought, that it was good game design, to have most people *mumbling*, and then people with quest starters talking real english, because it mimiked the way you'd filter information in the real world. Once you hear something interesting, you tune in. Worked well for me - but then in the end, once you rank up you had everyone have a voiceline to greet you for being back Mr. Holmes, because all those games do to simulate your impact in the gameworld... :) Its not bad, still...

I think I'm more miffed with Frogwares not opening up past locations visited, at least after you finished the main story (if doing so distracted testers too much) - because this REALLY made the world feel empty. :) Close some of them down permanently - and make that "impact/agency" on the players part. But closing down all of them.... And now, have a DLC, thats all about people talking abou a thing and then a fighting sequence.... (Last DLC was much better and also longer, but with an ending that fell flat. Still, finally better case deign. (If we focus on the positive.. ;) ))

There's absolutely no way to assert thus far that the game "flopped". It's a niche in any cases, and their games never caused a huge stir in the gaming world. What count are the review (which are very positive, more so than Devil Daughter and more on less on par with Crimes&Punishment) and the sells long-term wise. It was apparently their best launch among Sherlock games - we'll have to wait and see how it perfoms in the long run.
harlekinrains Jan 8, 2022 @ 11:21pm
I've only looked into (potential) sales on Steam (steamdb) and reviews on metacritic. Frogwares put out that this is the "best selling frogwares title so far" (but I dont know if this includes Sinking City, or not).

The issue with "long term sales" on their previous titles is, that they relied heavily on "sales events" as a booster (brings the game to the attention of more people who then might buy it at a higher pricepoint), but the price drop at which the game sold "more units" was immense, so with games in general - two months after launch you have generated the vast bulk of income in the games lifetime, if not for something very unexpected happening later on. (Going by metrics I heard in the Double Fine documentaries, and a few other places.)

Also review wise, they didnt reach 8 on metacritic, which might have hurt them. Reviewers either did not understandnew systems they put in, or were focusing on the fighting mechanic, which they thought was bad. (Again, I dont think so, because I had fun with the flow, but that was after I learned hot to ace it, most people dont - its mostly an issue with "its harder for people who fail quicktime events and then have less glowies on their next attempt".) Also taking on the "action" adventure label brought them a new audience, that wasnt used to adventure systems - which lead to a bunch of reviewers getting things wrong in the review (people stating, that they didnt want to find out which button to press in the QTEs "in the heat of the moment", even though they corresponded to the direction inpunts earlier, people describing that the game had no red line they could find, people focusing almost disproportionately on how empty the open world was...). After I've seen twitch streamers tackling the title I have a hunch why that happened. People in here even started to hate Jon for gods sake, because they percieved him as mocking them and not helping (One reviewer complained, that naming him Jon wasnt clever, because John Watson, you know...?), pesumably - while talking to 7000 NPCs in the openworld in the search for something that would put them back on track.

And reviewers that might have created a buzz for the title this time arround were either put off by the ambigous case design, or by the handling of LGBT and BLM themes. (They understood the disclaimer, but then thought that the game didnt comment enough on the issues (probably with the new life is strange in mind or something.) While John Dudebro picking up the game for its action adventureness, then put them down on metacritics, because this be woke game, with metrosexual main character ("FF15 bro" "This be not how Sherlock looks like!"). This lead to reviews not building buzz - so when you looked into Resetera forums (or neogaf for that matter), they were full of inacurracies - and people deciding to pick it up later, maybe - when it costs a 10er. Which was a reputation also built by marketing by giving it the name Chapter one - so people associeted it with episodic content and maybe picking it up later.

As far as sales on steam go, I compared it with "BALAN WONDERWORLD" one of Jim/Steph Sterlings worst titles of 2021, published by Square Enix, as a reference and both roughly sold the same.

Also the marketing campaign was mostly social media (?) and small (?) - I have no issue with that (eff marketing.. ;) ), but then the game had 80+ developers at its peak and even with no publisher taking the majority of the revenue, I'm not sure if the current steam sales are enough to call it a sucess.

Also console versions will suffer from no marketing even more, as most units will be sold on older gen, and that release was postponed to get the quality right.

(Small aside on Resetera postings in the first days - the "this game is not smooth framerate wise" theme was featured heavily there for some reason, and this is the biggest *facepalm* moment imaginable. Its like snob kids were trained on digital foundry for some reason - having a say on what this game is. They used unreal engine (famous for its streaming asset issues) to build an open world, they arent Ubisoft, and then the Playstation 5 video that showed the framegraph, featured the market place in cordonas rich district, while not getting at all what was happening. I looked at that area yesterday in Ansel (flew through it), and the place is so stuck full of detail and assets that have to be loaded, that it is a wonder it gets streamed in in realtime at all, but the video then only showed a street musician and a fountain, and forgot to mention any detail in the background -- then this became "this be how this game runs", by virtue of overentitled people, that expected 4k 60 for some reason, also proped up by people on 4790k processors, running the game below minimum spec, while most of the time you only got microstutters, when the game world streamed in the next segment - see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqz5UoO9t34 (running around the city part, also thats on a 1660Ti at 1440p), and suddenly this game was "technically flawed and not well optimized" in the minds of the release audience (on Resetera), which is almost entirely BS. (The game is polished to a flipping T for what it is (design decisions) with hardly any gameplay bugs at all in the release version...) but then, that this became a topic of interest at all, had to do with reviewers focusing on new systems, and not "universally" generating buzz this time arround, so gamers minds were free to wander to whatever the next person told them, then confirming what they had already decided, when they thought this was an episodic title... namely, that they would maybe buy it for 10 USD. As to how many people were impacted by this, I dont know - but if I read the usual places responsible for creating buzz around a title, this was the story that was presented around launch day.)

Hey guys. Any idea why the dlc mission "Gone girl" is not showing up in the post? I did finish 'A Gilded Cage', 'Love, Death, and Cordona', 'The Rugged Informant', and 'A Rat on a Boat. Is there any other prerequisite? Didn't find an answer anywhere and it would suck I am locked out of the cool rewards for finishing the chain. Thanks in advance.
