And even if you miss it, and finish the game, you will have enough checkpoints to return to an earlier one. Its just, that if you return to one where you are already in "the outside area" the last portion of the game plays in, and then dont immedeately reload, but play from that point forward again, that your earlier checkpoints might get overwritten, at which point you can be stuck in that "outside area". So basically, its impossible to mess up unless you really, really try - and in case you really, really try, Start making different saves after finishing each main quest.
And in general, as a Bethesda games veteran - never just have one savegame per game, thats just waiting for disaster to strike. All your confidence in computers and automated systems aside - if you invest 30ish or more hours into something, have at least one backup.
