Controller not working

My controller doesn't want to work and the controller support is the main reason I decided to buy this as I really hate playing on a mouse and keyboard. When I change my controls to controller through the options menu and hit apply, none of the controller buttons do anything and it ends up automatically reverting back (my controller does work on other steam games). Anyone know what I can do to fix this? I can't find anyone else having this problem. I'm on a PC btw, not the steam deck.

same problem too, steam does not recognize the game now has proper controller compatibility, so it will always warn me about it and won't don't let me use my global settings

Same issue too. When I hit apply, nothing happens. Keeps going back to keyboard and mouse.

Same problem here, I thought it was my new controller that was not working but I checked qnd ot works with other games, so I assume it is a steam-related problem as I get the same warning message as Silver :
