Honestly the difficulty curve felt pretty easy to me, I basically went with paladin, invested in finesse spells until Order 8, then took the leadership talents, which put me quite a bit ahead on unit caps. I then invested in the full finesse tree until I got the double cast and made sure to max level the most useful buff spells. As soon as I got to mage city my team was arch mage, knights, disciples, and the two ranged constructs. Every fight is buff, taunt on knight, and wreck everything at range.

I always play as mage in kb1
And i did the same for kb2, however the way they design mana as "consumables" concern me for the late game in the future, its limited and i havent see another way to get mana except from loot and crystals.
Especially for summon spell, they cost like 30-35 mana percast.

Paladin, you can only upgrade your skills(and thus spells) by gaining the right amount of X points wich are mostly rewarded in quests sadly so you will hit many artificial road blocks playing as a mage. Not to mention to the whole mana problems since it's more like a consumable now

Its a shame you can't play as a necromancer

You pretty much can though.

Spec into death/shadow magic
use an undead army comp
summon undead units
I even got a necromancer staff with a skull that I'm using now

Keep some versions of spells low level. Eg have a rank 3 summon skill, a rank 2, and a rank 1. (4 summon skills: Chimera, Bear, Golems, Ice Spirit)
Eg boost skills you have Light/Fire/Ice - have one in each rank level.
Eg direct damage spells same thing.

Mana Well skill exists in this game too (from the Mage City) but it's kinda hard to use I think. It's basically a stone skin + 3 mana cost, for 3 mana refund per attack. Only usable with a taunt unit. I'm keeping mana well at rank 1 for 8 mana cause 14 mana for 3 unit buff doesn't seem worth.

That way you can avoid overusing mana. I personally stopped using direct damage spells and primarily use control spells now (freeze/torpor) + rank 1 summon (to distract the AI)
