Army Unit Rank / Tier Issue & How to Rank Units Effectively?
Hiyas all,

My character is level 7 and I've done most of the easy fights working my way out from the starting city on the main map. Now I'm at 5 fights blocking me from progressing further, one is even, then the others are strong to very strong. I've had various units but so far have 0 units ranked up. My best is one group of dwarf militiamen at 110/120 towards second rank. My units are mainly tier 2 with one tier one, but all rank one. I notice the enemy groups feature some Tier 2 / Rank 2 units which clearly won't be pleasant. I don't see an option to find any more easy fights to Rank up my units. So I expect it'll be a bloodbath moving forward if it's possible at all. I do have enough funds to replace my army once probably but without ranked up units it seems questionable to spend the time. I've had multiple fights where I've lost multiple units completely and have tried switching to different units to try different things out. That seems to have deprived me of ranking units over multiple uses.

So is this a matter of starting over and immediately ditching my training map armies and exclusively using one set of units to Rank Up to be effective moving forward? Or other suggestions welcomed too... Thanks!

You have the right idea, if you want to have power spike early on, try to feed kills to specific type of unit to get Rank 3 faster. It really makes a huge difference for no losses challenge as well.

Pro tip: some units get incredible abilities/passives as they Rank up!!!

I had a team of nearly all tier 3 units by that stage. Do you keep letting whole squads die in combat? If so, you can keep some reserves (in excess to your leadership cap) and they will retain the rank from what I've seen.

The other possibility is maybe you are changing troops around a lot? Helps to stick with a main group for a bit before swapping around too much so you at least have some higher lvl units.

One other thing that helps is moral boosts. I have multiple items with moral boost which means I can mix two types of units and still keep them happy. This helps me make better team compositions for particular fights and helps me have a couple of rank 3 units supporting rank 1 units as I train them up. I try to maximise the kills on my lower rank units too so they get the XP.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Forgot to mention, don't kill units of stack with magic, it's "loss" of experience for units. Unless you really want to do that / make battle easier, I would advice not using damage spells and just heal/buff/debuff/summon etc

Thanks for the suggestions. Doing much better 2nd run and now at same spot have Rank 2 & even a Rank 3. It is critical to have a spare unit in reserve to preserve the unit's XP and understanding the fights better helps as well. It also seems easier starting with Finesse & Order as you get those units earlier.

lol so I have to start all over because I didn't focus xp on one or 2 specific units? What a waste of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time. I'm getting absolutely destroyed at level 7. These units are so much more powerful than me. I don't have time to keep starting over a bunch of times trying to figure out which units I need to level. This is stupid.

Sorry this game is over your head. All you need to do is avoid losing full unit stacks, then you can level literally everything the game offers if you dont skip any content. So just keep a healthy amount of Saves and you dont have to "keep starting over" like a moron.

There's no early game units you "need" to level, they will eventually be outdated and you have to use higher tier units. This is to keep things fresh and varied into mid-late game.

If you run into battles against enemies that are too strong right now, escape and come back later when you get stronger. The kings bounty series has always been like this, you are not supposed to able to win every single fight on the first encounter. Look for fights that you can win without losing too many units, else you will run out of gold to heal and recruit, which generally means "game over".

Should it be necessary to start over if you've had a bad start like I did... You can use Space Bar to skip dialogue and Escape Key to skip cut scenes. Speeds up progress considerably.

I've seen someone has said that even if you lose full stack which has a rank, it will have the same rank at vendor - is is true?

Do units get exp when they get wiped out in the battle (but did some kills and dmg)?

This. I would even argue that ranking up units early isnt even that important compared to buying high tier units. Btw, spearmen are op. And mages are very useful early on. Use them a lot.

That's cool, very good mechanic! What if they had just xp but not the rank, like 70/100, will xp save too?

I believe you need to have a spare unit in your reserves to preserve the XP & I believe rank of any full stack you lose. And I'm not 100% either, but what I've seen when I've had full stacks die even with one in reserve, they don't earn XP.
