wtf, no attack animation canceling for dodge...?
How is this even a thing anymore? Seriously. I mean yeah, it's certainly possible, but... There's a reason basically no one does this anymore, and if they do, they limit it to only a few in-game actions... I also think it goes without saying that over-tuned enemy damage, low character HP, low % healing drop chance, and no alternative damage mitigation mechanics, don't exactly synergize well on a list that also that contains "no attack animation canceling for dodge", and "game-loop requires player to repeat it many, many times over". Keeping this in the game will (with no exaggeration) turn off far more potential players than it will attract.

I like the game (excluding the dodge mechanic, obviously). I'd love to continue playing for like a hundred hours and see it hit the steam top sellers charts, however, this is such an erroneous and unattractive design choice... ugh... =(

There's no "proper" design choice in regards to animations cancels or dodge mechanics. It's the interplay between them that matters. In the case of emberknights, the dodge window is crazy generous, and the animations relatively short for most attacks.

You should not be spamming attack next to an enemy and hitting dodge once you see a windup. In a game like gungeon risk of rain, with far more enemies/bullets, an animation cancel makes sense.

In emberknights, attacks are well telegraphed, and consistent. You should be learning patterns, and going for 2-3 hits, then dodging.

I agree that enemies hit too hard in stage 3+, but that's another topic.

There actually is animation cancelling, but only for the first 2 sword swings. The 3rd swing (with the yellow slash) locks you into the animation

Haven't tried the other weapons yet, you'll absolutely be able to dodge out of enemy attacks if you only use your first 2 swings on them and save the 3rd for when you know you're safe

The staff I believe doesn't have any issues with being locked into an attack. You can let go of your charge and dodge away whenever. You just have to time the dodge right, which, I tend to not do with the poison-throwing stumps and the acid-spitting worms. But, it can be done.

hello! with our latest update, we made some improvements to the Rift Hammer, one being the ability to interrupt attack animations by using skills or dodging at any time.

we'll be looking at more weapon improvements in the coming updates!
