Worth checking out again?
Since the release of the PVE server I was tempted to play again but looking at the SteamDB charts the population is very very low. Does the game still get updates or is it basically in maintenance mode now or will soon be.

Gets an update every few months

You are correct. There is a very low population. Most of the people were on Russian servers. A handful were scattered elsewhere and legacy. Most servers have been emptied because of the start of the PvE server. It is very likely, that after the 14 day bonus, 2 day bonus for some who started on time, people will settle out of the PvE a little but right now the population is greatest over there.

Updates do not come out every few months, not significant ones. There are updates to turn on holiday events. They have actually increased updates though. There are very few QoL updates, very few new areas, enemies, items, weapons, etc. in each update. There has been a lot of updates if you have been away for a long time.

This game is the most fun, when you understand these things about it and do not put your hope in an active, friendly, engaging, support development or moderator staff. It's a hard grind and most people give up on PvP. The large spike in the beginning of the game is reflective of that; people hated it and it's mostly died down. Still goes on--on the Russian servers and a spattering here and there.

The PVE Server is more active than any server right now. It's great.

If you are into survival mechanics in an isometric form without the griefing involved in PvP games, then you should check it out. I've been playing since a day after the PvE launch and have been having fun setting up my own little domain and trying to level up skills. It is a grind. People are generally helpful in chat, even though most people don't speak English. You will see a lot of Russian, French, and I've seen Spanish/Portuguese. You don't have much to lose as it's reasonably priced. Try it out.

Too many people on the pve server if you ask me. Too many people for such a small map. there is barely any space left. I was harvesting and gathering my ass off before i went to the main land. There are abundant resources in the starter colony but once you head to the mainland, there is barely anything useful without looking around for 10 minute here and there. The biggest problem I see is that its soo many people that all the land is being taken and there is not much area for resources to spawn.

Yes, all the choice spots on the main land after the starter island are taken up. Near the main city, along the coast near the main city, along the edges of the main city. These are all spots toward the middle of the map, for those that are inclined to be in a centralized area. These spots are taken. But bear in mind your dominion (land) is limited to 5 days of inactivity. Some of these spots WILL open up after a time.

I am only here to disagree on the availability of land. I found a spot near where you land on the main map. I did a few quests to get up my 50 silver (and also sold gear I saved that was either a drop or that I crafted) and purchased the deed to increase my dominion size to medium (50 silver for a medium deed, 5 gold for a large deed). It took me a while to do, but not more than a few hours. This is how this game works. You grind, you exercise patience, and you understand that you will likely not get a choice spot unless you are lucky (or patiently wait for some people to fall off after a short amount of time).

These concerns that you raise are valid, but only to a degree. Patience pays off. Perseverance pays off. This is a survival game after all. There is land, or land will become available. It's not that much to place your small dominion down, save up, and then move it to a better location once it is available.
