Kickstarterの支援者の1人として開発元に確認しました。結論から言うと日本語は "2022.9.20" のリリースには間に合いませんでしたが、後日追加予定です。


本作はKickstarterでのクラウドファンディングによって資金を獲得して開発されたものですが、プロジェクトは日本語を含む多言語に対応することを約束して募集され、ゴールを迎えています。

しかし、リリース前に開発元のZelartに公式Discordのバッカー専用chで確認したところ、実際に日本語翻訳が進み納品まで済んでいたものの、LQAにおいてその翻訳品質に問題が見られたため、新たに別の翻訳者に交代して翻訳作業が再スタートとなったとの回答がありました。

以上の経緯により、リリース当日には日本語の実装が間に合っていません。Steamストアページの対応言語リストからも"一時的に"日本語が除外されています。

開発元は可能な限り早く日本語に対応することを約束してくれているので、本作に期待されている方はしばらく待っていただければと思います。

戦闘が面白そうなのと、何となく雰囲気と世界観が「アランドラ」っぽいところに惹かれて予約購入。アランドラのように謎解き要素はほぼ無いが、高難度で探索しがいのある良ゲー。

英語は毎日適度に勉強して１年半ほど（レビュー投稿時点）。日本語非対応（未対応）のゲームをやるため、外国の友人とのメッセージのやり取りをスムーズに、楽しくするため。
海外レビューはさっと読んだらDeepLで翻訳。勉強にもなる。俺のレビューを読むより他の海外レビューを翻訳した方が良いかも。
ともあれ、それを参考にして記述。よく分からない要素やシステムがあるので間違ってたらすまぬ。画面左上の表示物についての説明は後述。

このゲーム、ほとんどのマップが暗くて見づらく、攻略中は自分にスポットライトが当たっている感じになる。ただ、タイトルからして明るくないって言ってるし、絶望と死が入り混じった暗い世界観なので、その雰囲気さえ気に入ればむしろ「ね　いいゲームでしょう　これだからいいんですよこれが！」となる。

★戦闘★
高難度。死にゲーと言ってもいい。難易度はノーマル/イージーをいつでも変更可能。
トレーラー通り、ハイスピードのヒット＆アウェイやや連打型で「Hades」に近い。ちなみに俺は「Hades」は連打しすぎが嫌になってサムズダウン。そういった連打ゲーは基本好まない。ただ本作はローグライクではないし、戦闘と探索のバランスがそこそこ良いのでそこまで気にならない。

敵は多種多様で、本気で殺しにかかってくる。例として、動きが速い奴が数体同時、動きは遅いが攻撃は速くて強い奴、こちらの攻撃が届かない位置から火炎瓶を投げてくる奴、死ぬ間際に暴れる奴など。暗くて狭い地形が多いので油断してると不意打ちを食らいやすい。こちらも闇雲に連打しているだけでは攻撃や回避直後の僅かな硬直の間にボコボコにされかねないので、行動のタイミングを計る必要があり、常に緊張感がある。
ダッシュは回避を兼ねており、ダッシュ攻撃も出せてなかなか楽しい。
また、特定のタイミングで敵の頭の上にマークが出ることがあり、赤に対しては基本攻撃でカウンター、黄に対してはアビリティ（攻撃してると溜まるレイジゲージを使用）でカウンターができ、敵が一時スタンする。「SEKIRO」の『危』みたいなもの。

特にボスは攻撃パターンを見切らない限りゴリ押しで勝つのは不可能。かなりやりごたえがある。ザコ敵（全然ザコじゃないが・・・）は倒した状態でセーブすればリスポーンしないので、道中詰みそうになったら、ちょっと敵を倒したら戻ってセーブを繰り返して徐々に進む攻略法もあり。このゲーム、おそらく周回しないと全ての強化要素をアンロックできないかも？

HPはファストトラベルポイントに入るか、RTで使用のmedkitで全回復。ただmedkitはファストトラベルポイント（ここでスキルアンロックも行える）に入っても補充されない。これは道中のやや隠された場所に植物の種のような見た目で配置されている場合があり、そこから１つだけ補充できる。更に使用回数０の状態で死んでしまうと、難易度ノーマルの場合はmedkitを補充するのにはカルマ値が必要で、ほんの少し悪（負）に動く。しかも補充は一回ぶんのみ。これは戻されたファストトラベルポイントのすぐ近くに悪魔の植物みたいなのが出現して、インタラクトすると受け取れる。イージーではカルマ値は使われない。

-画面左上の表示物の意味-

• HPバー下、目が連なったような４つのアイコン
  黄カウンター成功ゲージ。これが４つぶん溜まった上でもう一度カウンターに成功すると、体力を１回復させるアイテムが出現する（攻撃して破壊する必要あり）。
  
• HPバー左、紫色で下に伸びているゲージ
  スキルポイントゲージ。最大まで溜まると+１され、スキルアンロックに使用できる。
  
• HPバー左の丸縁アイコン
  medkitを取得した時に、緑色の仙豆のような形で埋まる。

★カルマ★
説明不要だと思うがよくあるアレ。NPCに対して肯定的な返事や行動を取れば善（正）、逆なら悪（負）。ただ、NPCのメッセージは一定時間で自動送りになる上、カルマ値変動の選択は時限式なのでゆっくり翻訳して意味を理解してから返事をする余裕が無い。猶予は１０秒も無い気がした。かなり英語力がある人でなければ厳しい。翻訳アプリを使うにしても同じことだと思う。とりあえず適当に全部肯定してたら負に動いたこともあった。
まあ、気にしなければ大して問題はないが。
※通常の会話に関してはオプション→「Skip dialogues automatically」のチェックを外せば自動送りが停止します

★探索★
感覚としては「ガイア幻想紀」の赤い宝石を集める感じ（分かるかな？）。隠された場所にスキルポイント等があったりする。よく見るとダッシュで奈落を越えて行ける場所があることがある。こういった戦闘と探索のバランスはソウルライクと言っていいと思う。基本的に地図は無いが、進行上分かりやすくするためか、地面に矢印が描かれている場合はある。親切にミニマップはまだしも全体マップ、ひどいとアイテムがある位置まで表示してしまうJRPGが嫌いなタイプの人には丁度いい塩梅かと。あまりに親切すぎると探索の楽しみが無くなるし没入感が削がれてつまんなくなるんじゃあああッ！

-Spider Toy-
全部で23個あるアレ。中盤まで一体なんなのか、何に使うのか分からなかった。これはどこかにいるあるNPCに一定量渡すことでご褒美をもらえる。

-他のキーアイテム-
よくわかりません！ただ、無駄な消耗品も無く、アイテム管理が煩雑ということもなくて好印象。

では最後に。NPCの話は結構長い（俺の話も長い・・・）が、英語に自信がある、もしくはそんなの気にしない高難度アクション好きな人は楽しめると思う。別に日本語対応を待たずにとりあえず一周してもいいと思う（実際のプレイ感、実績取得率から見るに、積んでいるというより、難しくて詰んでいる人が多い？）。俺のようにどっちつかずな人も、雰囲気を楽しむためにもむしろ英語のままでプレイした方がいいんじゃないかな。世界観および話の流れで何となく言ってることが理解できることはあるし。

I really enjoy taking a blind chance on games like these and being open to interesting experiences, but obviously not all of them will be great. In fairness, the environments and atmosphere are well done. All of the art, effects, and animations are genuinely fantastic. The music is also pretty great. I don't want to be too harsh because I know there's a lot of passion here, yet it's so muddied beneath obtuse, annoying, and negligent design.

Gameplay-wise, you're just mashing attack and dashing around until you build up your meter to use when an enemy has a yellow mark over their head. Your attacks will interrupt enemies, making it dead easy to handle only a couple at a time — this means "difficulty" translates to swarms, environmental hazards, obnoxious ranged enemies, and attacks that barely let you in to begin with. After 4 hours, it finally hit me that there's very little else to it.

The story isn't as interesting as people are describing it to be. It's painfully generic "who's the real bad guy" cult society stuff with derivative supernatural elements, in that same twisted/disturbed religious vein as many before it. It's clearly trying to emulate storytelling that has already been done and it isn't succeeding. Apparently the game has a morality system, which I didn't realize for the first 3 hours because it was not conveyed in any way, I just finally figured out what the bar that kept popping up was. The "good" choices are, again, completely bland. The nasty, evil guards won't go look for this woman's son, so she asks you if she should keep trying to get the guards' help; saying "no" makes you a bad person, and that's it. I figured I'd maybe offer to help, or we'd at least talk about the guards' unreliability, but you're just wrong because you didn't pick the "hopeful" choice. The moral politics at play here don't ask anything interesting of you whatsoever.

The dialogue is weak and artificial, and it's riddled with spelling mistakes. I'd be fine with a couple, but there are dozens. Many aspects of gameplay are barely explained, if at all, and that goes beyond the core mechanics. Sometimes your attack's rhythm changes for no reason I could discern. You pick up a bunch of collectibles and get zero info about what they do or what they even are — I've got 9... spider larvae, or something, and I still can't even tell what it is that I'm taking them from. It's fun to piece together a story and to have questions about a game's world, but it's not fun at all when writers rely so heavily on ambiguity that I don't even know what questions I should have.

I've seen others compare There Is No Light to games like Hades, and I'd agree, but only unfavourably. If you're coming to this game for the interesting style and atmosphere, just be warned that the way it actually plays is not nearly as enjoyable or engaging.

There is No Light is a challenging action RPG with souls-like elements. From the off, the pixel-art is immediately striking. The top-down perspective is reminiscent of 16-bit Zelda games, but with an intricately detailed Lovecraftian aesthetic.

The game takes some time to reveal itself. The first 20-30 minutes are rather slow, but effectively set the scene and establish the story, which, in a nutshell, is about a man (The Hero) who sets out to rescue his child after they are abducted by demons. The narrative is surprisingly deep, and much more engaging than I anticipated. NPCs frequent town and hub areas, all have unique dialogue and many can influence the path you take. There’s a moral, or ‘karma’, meter that moves according to the choices you make and this affects the ending you receive.

The game world is epic in scale. The developers state there’s 30 hours of gameplay here, and that would not surprise me. I’ve played 10 hours and feel I’m only scratching the surface.

There is No Light features a satisfying combat system. You have a melee attack and a dash move. There are four weapons to collect and upgrade, and, like any good soulslike, learning enemy patterns and precision timing are required to overcome the hoards of demons in your way. As with the locations, enemies are beautifully designed, and bosses are huge and overwhelming. My only complaint is that things can become a little repetitive with most encounters playing out to an attack, dash, attack, dash rhythm.

The ‘normal’ difficulty may be too much for some. The Hero can be killed in three of four hits, sending you back to your last save point. Checkpoints are fairly frequent (and there’s always a save before a boss fight) so you’ll never be too far away from where you died, but, expect to repeat some sections multiple times.

That said, the developers have included plenty of accessibility options to make this a game for all. After restarting a couple of times, you will be given the option to unlock a health kit. This is not free and affects your karma meter. There’s also a fast travel gate to skip retreading certain sections; again this costs ‘moral’ points.

If you decide the difficulty is still too much, you can switch to ‘Traveller’ mode, which gives you more health, reduces the number of enemies and makes the bonus health kit and extra checkpoints free.

For Steam Deck owners, I can confirm the game plays fantastically ‘out of the box’ at a rock solid 60fps. It really is a perfect fit for Valve’s handheld.

There is No Light is a beautiful game, with a compelling story. There are plenty of collectables, many hidden off the beaten track and there’s a useful fast travel system, allowing you to revisit previous areas.

The difficulty can be brutal, but it hasn’t put me off. This is a game I’ll be playing through to the end!
All in all, a potential indie classic.

×気になる点
・武器は3つ＋アルファだが使い分けが難しい、ヒット＆アウェイ戦法だが単純にかわす→逃げるの単調な作業になりがち
・敵ライフに自動回復する白ゲージがあり、削りきらないと一瞬で回復、何度も戦う手間になる。
　複数の白ライフ持ちの敵に囲まれるときつい＆手数の多い武器でごり押し戦法となる
・ストーリーは断片的な部分は提示されるが、あとはプレイヤーの想像におまかせ、
　主人公の赤ちゃんは主人公に取り込まれたって事でいいんですか？？

面白いと思うかは個人によるゲーム、自分的には
ビジュアル、世界観、BGMにほれ込んでいたので最後までプレイ、満足しています。
希望の灯台とアブソリュートのダンジョンはトラップも含めお気に入りです

ダークな世界観が好きな人、トレイラー見て食指が動いた人にはお勧めします。

退廃的で陰鬱さたっぷり。
日本語の翻訳は良質で物語の理解に困ることもない。

ただ、純粋にゲームとして退屈なのである。

操作する世界がどういったところなのか、アートワークが巧みに表現してくれる。

演出としての物語進行もカットシーンが入って漫画的に描写されるので何が起きているのかわかりやすい。


主人公がものすご～～～くつらい体験をして苦境に陥っているのはわかるのだが、プレイヤーは置いて行かれている感がある。理由は簡単だ。過程の描写が雑で結果だけをプレイヤーに見せているからだ。過程の描写はアクションゲームとして不要なのでカットしたのは英断ではあったが、今度はそれで物語の情緒が失われているのは残念である。ましてや本作は物語を見せる意図が強いのに。

移動中に前触れもなく、地面を叩きだす演出が入ったりと、主人公の憤りを演出させる描写なのはわかるが情緒不安定で落ち着きのないやつにしか見えない。

ゲームとしてはアクションアドベンチャーとあるがアドベンチャー部分が多く、戦闘→イベント演出→移動…という流れになっていて戦闘の頻度が多くなく、育成要素も乏しいと感じた。

物語性をプッシュしているのだろうなというのはわかるが、残念ながら物語そのものが面白いとは感じられない。

操作していて「アクションとして求めている部分」もなかなか訪れず、やめることにした。


ちらほら見るが、「制作者が考える面白い物語」が前面に出すぎている系のゲームだと感じた。

アートワークや物語性を伝えたいのはわかったから、アクションというジャンルを選んだ以上アクションとしての面白さも伝えてくれよ、と言いたい。

もともとこの作品の存在自体、リアルタイムで認知しておらず、セール時に安くなっていた本作を偶然見つけて、なんとなくレベルで購入してみたが、当時の自分が認知していなかっただけのことはあるなぁ、と。

実際に触っていて微塵も面白いとは感じなかった。

出すジャンル、間違えているんじゃないですかねぇ。

There Is No Light is an action rpg fitting you into the role of a nameless hero in search of his only child taken from him by malignant forces. While it offers an engrossing storyline and detailed pixelated graphics, the combat is repetitive and often throws cheap tricks at its players to increase the difficulty. I recommend it to fans of the genre, but beware, your death is almost guaranteed, and do not expect any hand-holding.

Tragedy struck the hero when his child was taken away from him by the Great Hand, an omnipresent God whose power stretches across the known world, garnering blind obedience from its devotees. Determined to rescue his child, he ventures towards perilous locales, bloodying his hands and honing his blade. If he has to make a deal with the devil to grow stronger, then so be it.

My thoughts
The story is dark and foreboding, using religious motifs and questionable moral dilemmas to shock and often catch its players off guard. Some of the hero's decisions are ruled by the Karma system, a mechanic that keeps track of his negative or positive karma, and depending on where he aligns, will factor into an ending. I enjoyed this approach since it is not always clear what the right or wrong options are, and it will be up to your better judgment. I like that some of my choices matter and have consequences later on. Further supplementing the story are notes, dialogues, sidequests, and flashbacks to keep the flow of the narrative interesting. Rich in lore, it is told in a similar format as the “Souls” series where you must piece together lore bits to paint a whole picture, which I thoroughly appreciate.

Hit and Run
The main character, referred to as “Blondie” in-game, is limited to a basic attack and a special attack called an “Omen ability” that can disrupt enemies based on color prompts that appear on top of their heads. Red means you can interrupt them with basic attacks, while yellow means an omen ability can disrupt the attack. To activate an Omen ability, Blondie must strike enemies consecutively to earn him enough “rage,” the meter that triggers an ability. To be remotely successful, I got acquainted with the “hit and run” method because Blondie is like a glass cannon, and one slap from a monster can put him on life support if you dodge too late or early. Specific enemy encounters such as mini-boss fights follow a waved-based design, where opponents continue to enter the arena until you've cleared every round. Equipment
You will be stuck with “Omen,” the default sword of Blondie for the majority of the time, but three other weapons can be obtained by defeating bosses in the areas they preside over. Depending on which location you tackle first, you can have a weapon that can, for example, block and provide great passives. Certain equipment can be advantageous early on, and I wish there were some subtle hints like NPC chatter that gently nudged players in a specific direction because I was stuck with Omen for a good 10 hours before locating another weapon to frolic with. Sap me
"Sap" is a very rare resource that acts as a medkit and cannot readily be replenished. "Easy mode" recharges one Sap while resting at checkpoints and can be for people who do not wish to gray their hair and spiral into madness as I did. You can also trigger a mini healing orb to spawn out of foes by striking them with an Omen ability to fill a meter. However, I find this mechanic unreliable because, by the time the meter builds up, it will often be too late. I vehemently dislike the healing system, and considering you can only upgrade your health twice, Blondie has little survivability. Even with all the weapons and upgrades collected, I didn’t feel stronger even towards the end, and perhaps the point is to feel oppressed every step of the way.

Exploration
Exploration is highly encouraged because Sap and collectibles are always hiding in plain sight. I love traversing through the blood-soaked, often corpse-riddled terrain and absorbing the creepy atmosphere, granting a much-needed reprieve from fighting. You will also face platforming sections during your travels, but instead of jumping, you dash, for example, on a plank jutting out from a cliff. When resting on checkpoints, enemies do not respawn (unless you die) and can also heal Blondie, mitigating the issues I have with healing.

The Difficulty Dilemma
Sometimes, the challenge feels like it relies on “artificial difficulty,” meaning it uses cheap methods to increase the likelihood of death. There’s a chance I'm not a good player, but when five or more enemies are throwing fireballs, kicking, and not giving you any personal space, it can be strenuous to dodge all of them at once and read their moves. On top of that, the landscape when fighting enemies is usually narrow, and you can accidentally dodge and go off the ledge, decreasing your already limited health points. I find it maddening because, at times, it seems like the developers ran out of ideas when it comes to challenging their players. Thankfully, the main bosses are more entertaining since they’re not relying on a group of minions to “up” the stakes, and instead, change their tactics when they’re at a certain health threshold.

Every pixel is detailed, depicting a story of the events that transpired in the history of that place. I am very impressed with the art direction, and it's why I am partly attracted to this game. I encountered minor bugs where Blondie would get caught in the environment or the camera doesn't follow him during area transitions, and reloading was the only fix. Other than that, the performance is stable, even on the Steam deck. There were no issues with the keyboard/mouse or controller, although the default layout is a bit awkward, so I had to immediately reconfigure it.

By the end of the game, my death count was 169. That is how much of a wreck I was. I am going through NG+ to see the other endings, so I appreciate the added replayability. I had my moments of rage and despair while playing, and it really knew how to push my buttons, but I can recommend it to fans of the genre. It will rile you up, and it’s okay to turn it down to easy mode like I did because it’s better to have fun with a game rather than feel frustrated by it.

The lack of a map is what really made me quit the game, this game REALLY needs a map, i love the art, i kinda like the frantic playstile and the variety of weapons but NOT HAVING a map is just absurd, im not even asking for secrets, a map like blasphemous or castlevania's would be REALLY APPRECIATED

What a way to start a review, eh?

I tried Bleak Faith: Forsaken, and found it to be an absolute garbage of a game, so I asked for a refund. With that money I wanted to try something new, and There Is No Light was recommended to me for sharing souls-like aspects.
I'm not going to lie, I had never heard of the game but I decided to give it a try.

The truth is that, according to what I had read in the reviews, and even more, seeing that there was no active community (not even a simple wiki), I didn't expect much from the game.

When I started playing, the setup of the story seemed interesting enough. But as I progressed, it became more and more fascinating. Suddenly I found myself reading every piece of lore, and I don't know how it happened but it became an absolutely rewarding experience. For such a dark story, one imagines a Souls-level narrative; that is, a dead world from which virtually nothing can be extracted. Here people interact with each other, talk, communicate, tell you things: the world is alive. And yet somehow the devs managed to make both worlds coexist, a fluid and fun narrative, and a dark story where people are really suffering a catastrophe and are not understanding why.

I liked the combat from the start. I didn't think it was anything too remarkable, but I thought it delivered well. As the hours went on, I found that I had very high control of my character, which reminded me of Hollow Knight's responsive control design. So I could say that I ended up finding it a fun and responsive design.

Artistically... what can I say, it blew my mind from the start. I'm not very attracted to pixel-art, and in most cases I don't like it; but with this game there's no turning back, I find it wonderful. Ominous when it needed to be, terrifying when it deserved to be, and glorious in surreal situations.

Precisely because of all of the above, I feel that I was lucky enough to enjoy a work that brought me many hours of fun and I am deeply grateful for this piece of art.

I understand that, from what you may have read in other reviews, it seems that I have played a game totally different from the rest... and I feel the same. Frankly I'm surprised because I thought it was an excellent game and I couldn't connect with almost any negative review. I think it's a game worth trying, worth sitting down to discuss its story, worth talking about.

I think it has not succeeded merely because of publicity. I recommended it to three friends, and all three are enjoying it to the max.

I hope someone at zelart see this comment: Thank you for this game. I am eager to see what you have learned from this work, and to see what you will develop next.

+ visuals and their constant variety
+ fast paced combat

+/- dodge-hit-dodge-hit-dodge gameplay. Every now and then you can use a stronger attack, which is just a hit with a better interrupt
+/- labyrinths everywhere
+/- a lot of lore and optional dialogue, especially at the beginning. You can run past it to actually get to the action, but it really tested my patience. Action games shouldn't start with text lore dumps

- the game hates you and wants you to repeat the levels over and over, while not rewarding you with anything worthwhile
- small amount of life, so you die very quickly. Some games can pull it of but...
- one of the best mechanics in souls games (you could even say that's something that made the genre possible) is the idea of estus flasks. Ability to greatly regenerate life when you find ~2 seconds of safety between or during a fight, multiple times. This way you don't feel like you already lost when you get hit in an early encounter - you can just chug to full life at little cost. It's important that you won, the fact that you lost some life is secondary. This game doesn't have anything like it, even though it really needs it with the number of enemies you have to fight. Instead it has a completely unreliable, rare small regen when you you are doing well in combat and hidden single-use healing plants
- enemies have immunity to friendly fire (including fire itself)

It just doesn't seem fun. It disrespects my time too much for what it promises to provide.
I also cannot shake the feeling that this game could have been a beautiful story-based boss rush. A lot of elements are there, just focus more on interesting bosses, add more options in combat and for the love of all gods remove or at least heavily cut down on the labyrinths with tons of enemies. This way having lore dumps (with some amazing visuals that the game can pull off) would be a great way to unwind between the bosses.
