If you remember, or have heard of, 3D Monster Maze in the Sinclair ZX81 days then you'll know exactly what to expect. I'm sure I had something similar on my old Amstrad CPC. One of the 12 Amsoft games given away with each machine. Sultan's Maze?

Basically this is an old school 3D maze made to run on modern hardware. It's nice to have in the library for old time nostalgia.

For a game that's a couple of bucks. This is not too bad. Sure, the level editor is very limited and you can complete the campaign in under a hour or less. You can easily dodge The Phantom if you just go around him when he gets close. This is like the only horror game where you can customize your surroundings. In other games, the developers just either make you have to code your own or they aren't targeting horror audiences. So, since this is the only game like that out there, It's definitely something to buy if you can't code or are looking for a time killer with just barely any replayability, which stinks but I guess no game can last forever

This reminded me of playing Wolfenstein 3d all those years ago, running around a maze of vaguely samey walls trying (and completely failing) to memorize the level layout, then dying to a soldier who was standing a little to the left right behind me when I entered the room, but which I didn't see

It's a game of coffee break maze escape, you're thrown into a maze, have 30 seconds or so to find the key and the exit (once the time limit runs out a ghost appears that is hunting you, you can still walk around but outmaneuvering the ghost while trying to orient yourself and find the exit is pretty tense). Some of the mazes are easier to memorize, but when they have wall segments that you can run around fully, its hard to get your bearings

Each level is randomly selected from an existing pool of levels, so even if you start one of the campaigns (or whatever those are you chose when you start), you can't really learn to beat it properly. Items like extra time, points and keys are also randomly distributed around the level, so good luck with that

Phantom 3D is a spiritual successor to early maze based 3D games of the 80's such as 3D Monster Maze or Maze War. Like those games it has a pretty simple gameplay loop in which you must collect treasure and find a key and exit to get out of the maze, however there is a timer counting down that once it reaches the end a phantom will enter the map and head directly for the the player. You can get scrolls that will increase your time limit and can be used to push the phantom away once he spawns on map. If the phantom catches the player he takes your soul and you get a game over.

The game features a bunch of more modern bells and whistles that earlier 3D maze games did not have, like random item spawns and map rotation and a pretty intuitive level editor which can be used to create your own maps that you can then play and insert into the different campaign play lists that the game offers or make your own. As usual for Graverobber Foundation games the game contains an awesome soundtrack that I enjoy immensely and together with the environment ambience creates an atmosphere that earlier 3D maze games were not really able capture. I always ending up buying this guys soundtracks of course.

This game is even more niche than the devs last game and I would only really recommend it for people who have a fascination or nostalgia for the very specific era and genre of video games the game is attempting to recreate. I like that sort of thing but I could imagine someone might find it boring if they just buy the game without knowing what they are getting into. It is very cheap and reasonably priced though.
