The Binding of Isaac

Why "Isaac" will NEVER be a "Great" game
I have almost 200 hours logged into this thing. I have played nearly every combination of weapon that exists. I have written about this game and pondered it's place in the world. And I have concluded that while there are thousands of gamers who love this game, it will never be on any top 10 PC "greatness" lists, it will never be a game that we look back upon, say, like "Baldur's Gate", "Fallout 1 & 2" or even dare I even suggest a contemporary "TF2".

Here's why:

ANY game where success of winning depends upon the randomness of a power-up drop over the skill of the player is a major fault.

You can flame all you want about how wrong I am, but the bottom line is WE ALL LIKE TO FEEL LIKE WE ARE KICKING ♥♥♥ WHEN WE WE PLAY A GAME. That is the bottom line. In TF2, L4D2, Dota 2, Starcraft 2 and any other successful game, we know that after playing a certain amount of hours, we will KICK ♥♥♥ because of the time we invested in PRACTICE.

But in "Isaac", no matter how much time we invest in playing, there is no guarantee that our allegiance will be rewarded. We will always be at the mercy of the power-up. There is no way to beat "Sheol", no matter how great we have become at dodging little pellet-bullets, unless we have the proper power ups. And this creates player frustration.

And that is why this will never be a great game. Interesting, perhaps even occasionally entertaining and thought-provoking. But until players can feel like they actually have a chance at truly kicking ♥♥♥ because of the skill they have deservedly acquired through months of dedicated practice (over the random "luck" of the power-up drop'), "Isaac" will always fall short.

But you can't beat 3 bucks for a game! Worth the loot!

Keep on gaming!

TBOI is EzPz compared to Super Meat Boy...
If you want them to die in hell for TBOI, I don't want to see what you reserve them for Meat Boy. LMAO.

And you don't even have 10h on TBOI. Half a year for 10 hours? What a gamer.

Isaac is allready a GREAT game... nuff' said
I understand that it can be fustrating, but I see this "fault" as an actual part of the game, why we enjoy it. It is a unique feature for a unique gaming, rendering it an endless, yet entertaining game, to some.
The points you say prevent this game from being a great game are why I think it is a great game.
It's not just frustrating, it's snes-era, ghouls and ghosts frustrating. That's never a good thing.

Sure it is. You get lucky enough to play for a while and make it to a really hard level, then BAM! You lose it all and have to restart the game in one fell swoop. No checkpoints in BOI + completely random and often useless powerups + slowdown while fighting = pounding head on desk difficult.

I always make it to an hard level. And that's because skill, not because luck.
Oh and slowdown is pretty good because it makes dodging easier. Unless is a crappy "commands are stuck" type of slowdown.

Sorry but however much 'skill' you think you have, you can still be totally screwed by the wrong powerup/room/enemies/boss at any given time. Especially if like most people you do not have all of those icons memorized as to what they are and what they do. It's frustrating.

Slowdown is bad because it makes you get HIT easier.

Alright.

There are 3 things that make a run succesfull in this game:

Skill
Knowledge
and Luck.

You need at least 2 of these things to win.

I've acquired the Knowledge thanks to some good BoI youtubers and a bunch of websites.
However my skill is not high enough to compensate a huge lack of luck.
This site http://www.platinumgod.co.uk tells you what each of these "power-ups" do, and I highly suggest you to check out Bisnap and Namztak on youtube because they are really good and you'll learn a lot thanks to them.

I do assure you that some players (CobaltStreak, LethalFrag) have obtained enough skill to win most of the runs, with kill streak of 400+.
