9 Lives - Worst Item Ever?

So I was on a BoI run, and I was doing great. I had a total of 7 heart containers, mad upgrades like Split shot from "Parasite", Tough love (chance of shooting a tooth for super dmg), BOTH compass AND treasure map, lots of other stuff. Then, I open a regular red chest and accidently collect a stupid dead cat (9 Lives). All was for naught...the item cursed me for the rest of the game. I turned the game off, frustrated as hell after trying to clear a room full of those enemys that shoot the bug out of their stomachs. One hit from the bug gets rid of one full heart, so I was screwed. Also, it's almost impossible to beat Mom without getting hit once.

In my opinion, 9 Lives is the worst item you could get. I'd rather die in 7 hits instead of dying in one hit, 9 times. Plus, to make matters worse, each death while holding 9 lives counts as a regular death.

Anyone have a similar, frustrating story? Leave a reply, I'd love to hear other stories of sheer frustration and anguish.

Also, I've learned to open red chests more cautiously. One red chest might get rid of 7 health upgrades, just like that!

If you have an on use explosion or hurt yourself item or a handful of bombs you can kill a boss, then before collecting the item kill yourself and respawn in the previous room. The item will stay in the room but the boss will respawn. Not really recommended if you have a lot of hearts though.

In short, it lets you farm 8 items from a single boss, but not worth it if you have built up a big pile of hearts.

I may get 9 Lives if I'm playing Blue Baby, but other than that... No way.

I was doing great. I had X ray goggles, the head lamp thing, the map, the compass, so I basically knew where everything was. I also had Dr. Fetus, and Mr. Boom or something, so I shot extra powerful bombs, and a lump of coal from krampus, so my bombs were super OP. Then I picked up the best friends for life item. Its basically a ??? with a palate swap to pink and a bit bigger than isaac. It lays down on the floor and shivers( Like isaac or ??? in the loading screens and cathedral battles), then blows up, but I didnt know that. I used it and as it lay there, I walked up to it, because I wasn't sure what it was. Then it blew up, took ALL 8 of my hearts and 2 soul hearts, and killed me. I was in the womb 2. And that was absolutely terrible.

Red chests can sometimes be dangerous, though they can sometimes be rewarding

9 Lives can be amazing if you get it early (when you still have 1-3 hearts in the basement/caves so it doesn't take too much from you). It can essentially give you unlimited deals with the devil, and you can take it no matter what when it's in Satan's room. I just kill myself with deals with the devil and revive with 1 heart, you can use it to get insane loadouts as long as you know when to stop killing yourself with the deals.

The nine lives is officially a terrible item, even the game agrees having it is a detriment, they even have a challenge which gives you it, that's all it does, nothing like bad luck or no treasure rooms, it considers just giving you that item enough to qualify as a challenge.

This is actually a bug that seems to have no intent of being fixed. The best friends forever will instantly kill you if it gets hit by an attack, it's probably the worst item in the game because of this bug.

This is actually a bug that seems to have no intent of being fixed. The best friends forever will instantly kill you if it gets hit by an attack, it's probably the worst item in the game because of this bug.

You are wrong, whenever i find 9 lives i'm most of the times the most happy man on earth ( when i'm not far into the late game with alot of red containers ), first of all, it's one step forward to being guppy, second, it gives you so much chances to get free deals of the devil.

Once you get alot better in the game, you don't actually need many health to survive, so it opens up a ton of possbilities.

Killing a boss while standing over where the trapdoor spawns and falling down instantly making you miss what could potentially be a vital HP or damage upgrade. Its only happened once, but it was enough to crown it one of the worse things I have done so far.

Agree with Midgeamoo. Only useful if you get it when you only have 1-2 hearts, which hopefully is on the first couple levels. However, it's still fairly bad. Worse than any stat improving item.

Situational item. It's useful early in to exploit certain things like the deals and the trap rooms, and can lead to getting Guppy, but doesn't work late-game.

Isn't it usually closed until you move away from it specifically to avoid that?

I always find pretty easy to kill mom without getting hit once...

Actually pretty easy if you use the door exploit.

It's not even hard without the door exploit. Mom is a pretty easy boss after you've fought her enough.

It's very rare that I find 9 lives and don't take it. The ability to completely exploit devil deals and boss item farming is so worth it.
