How to connect a third party ps3 controller to the PC
Okay, so I have an AfterGlow third party ps3 controller that I bought for my ps3. I bought a couple games from steam and wanted to use that to play on my PC but could not get it working through DS3 Tool or Better DS3 because the programs would not recgonize the device because it was third party. Anyway, I spent a while looking online and on youtube for a solution to the problem or a way to make the controller work and most forums told me it would not work and to go buy the sony dualshock controller instead. Being broke, I decided to fiddle around with an xbox emulator but it would not work. I noticed alot of people online having trouble with the program as well and have errors and such. I figured out how to make it work though and thought I'd share with you guys on steam just in case you were having problems. If you have made it work already, then awesome, but I decided to post this to help those who do not know what to do.

First you need to make sure the Visual C++ 2012 is installed. Here is the link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679
Press download and then select both the x64-bit and x86-bit. Both are needed (for my computer anyway).

Next download this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=35. This is needed for the program to work.

After that, click this link: http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/ and scroll down to where the download options are. One will be 32-bit and one will be 64-bit. Even if your computer is a 64-bit computer like mine is, still download the 32-bit. The 64-bit has issues and was not detecting my controller, but once I downloaded the 32-bit, it worked.

After that, click the file and extract the files. Once you've done that, run the file as an administrator. The program will ask you if it can make a file, click yes on both questions. After that the program will open and ask you if it can search online for drivers and such, click next and then finish.

After it is done setting up the controllers, beside controller 1, the box should be lit up green meaning the controller has been detected and it working. Try moving your controls around and testing them out. You can customize your controller in the program but it should be automatically set up.

Head into steam and the controller should work. If not, simply go to controller settings in the game and manually set it up.

If this does not work for you, I'm sorry, but it worked for me. If it doesn't work, let me know and I can see if I can help.

Have a good day!

I know this is an old post but you've helped me out to no end sir.

Recently got a couple of cheap third-party PS3 controllers for some local multiplayer with a friend, expecting I could just use motioninjoy or ScpToolkit (I couldn't) and I'd almost given up hope.

Thanks dude!

This actually worked perfectly, even the 32-bit part, thanks trains

If you have the time trains2014, consider pasting your instructions into a guide. I think it'll be able to help out people that don't search the forums but look at guides.

Hi there, I know this is an old post but, is there a way to set up the controller to play games outside Steam? like GOG games. Before I had some PS3 controllers and worked perfectly on any game regardless the platform but they just stopped working so now I just bought a 3rd party controller but it only seems to work in Steam games and not any other.

Something I later found out is that you need to put the x360ce file into the directory of the game's executable before running it. So if you look for wherever said GOG game is installed and put it in there, it should work.

Steam have actually got their own 'controller emulator' built-in now, which is better because it works on Unity games too. When I have Steam open it still seems to be active even in non-Steam games that I haven't added to my library, which causes conflicts with x360ce.

At some point I'll look into if you can therefore just replace x360ce with always having Steam running, but for the time being I'm happy enough just closing Steam when I'm using non-Steam games.

I think Steam now has some builtin tools to help with third party controllers although I haven't used it myself. You can get there by going to Settings. Then select the tab before last, which is labled Controller. Then click on GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS and fidle around with those. Hopefully you can get something to work like that.

And that stuff only supports ps4 without using any other software.

They recommend using ScpToolkit.

See if your remote is supported here: https://github.com/nefarius/ScpToolkit
At the very bottom it says compatible controllers.

You can download ScpToolkit here:
https://github.com/nefarius/ScpToolkit/releases/tag/v1.6.238.16010
(Note that the developer has stopped working on ScpToolkit, but it still might work.)

I have no idea of the quality of that software or what I'm doing, so use that software / follow my advice at your own risk.

If that doesn't work maybe you can google: ps3 remote steam or something similar. Or someone else can help you out. Good luck.

If you don't use windows then we'll have to try something else.

Sorry if I'm being a dumb-dumb, but by remote do you mean controller?

At this point I can confirm that X360CE is obsolete. Pretty much any directinput controller can now mimic xinput in almost all games. The only trouble I've had recently has been with non-Steam games that start from a desktop launcher.

It's also possible to turn off emulation completely for the desktop and those particular non-steam games (which will more than likely accept directinput anyway).

Sorry to keep adding but I'm Zakk Wylded: this needs to be set up in big-picture mode.
I can't really be bothered to go into the details unless necessary, but if you still need a hand leave another comment.

Yeah, by remote I mean controller, and I still need help, the issue is that the light goes green when I plug in the remote on the x360 software, but the controllers lights (ps3 after market controller) will continue to flash or they will just turn off, and the remote won't work.

Yeah, I'm running windows 10 home 64 bit, I've already tried this software no luck :( I'm beginning to wonder, cause I have multiple software that I have tried to connect my ps3 controller to, if they are clashing???
