persistent crash to desktop

Every 20 minutes or so the game crashes to desktop. No error window and no relevant event log I can find. Happens both while flying and in menus. Is this happening for anyone else?

There was no issue back in December when I played through the whole game on the Game Pass version. I'm coming back for a new playthrough on Steam with the new 0.8 update and cannot play with the crashing.

4770k and 3080ti, 3440x1440 with DLSS max settings ~100 fps. I play all sorts of games daily without crashing so I don't think there is a hardware stability issue here.

OK, thanks for testing this. Let us now how it goes without sending user data or a downgraded graphics driver.
I think we can rule out a conflict between steam and game pass.
I'm wondering if we do have a small memory leak in this version and the problem is that you run out of memory after 20+ minutes, but if that were the case I'd expect a lot more reports regarding this and also some sort of error message. I'm running out of ideas here, unfortunately....

I tried using the config options and instead of crashing, rage quit after ~35 minutes. I hate repeating fights and did the same one 6 times. So clearing my config files appears, at least for the time being, to have cleared the issue. I will update if that changes.

Driver downgraded to 472.12 (September 2021). Turned off the user data setting. Ran in a small window. Continued last mission and sat still, AFK. Started 5:50 pm crashed 6:20 pm (30 minutes).

Memory usage flat. I took screenshots right after setting the game up and after it crashed. Only interesting thing I can see in task manager is a quick GPU spike. I will try again and see if I can get a higher resolution recording of that.

One last test for tonight. I opened the game and left it sitting on the main menu. It crashed, I'm not sure exactly when but somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes.

This is really strange. Have you tried to cap your FPS either ingame or via GeForce system settings? Do you have a high refresh rate monitor? Try something low like 30 or 60 FPS and see if it helps.
And maybe see if there's an update for your Motherboard as well.

Capped at 100 fps in game. Monitor is 120hz with GSync so I like to run around 90-110 fps. Motherboard Z87-A. I'll try a lower frame cap. I really don't think there's something wrong with my hardware since I play all sorts of games and this is a unique problem. We know it absolutely has to be something that changed between 0.7 and 0.8 because 0.7 runs fine. The fact that it crashes in the menu and only with 0.8 hopefully can help you narrow it down because we have ruled out the gameplay itself.

Checked in after latest hotfix. Got really hopeful around 45 minutes that it wouldn't crash, but it still does. Tested further, crash repeated twice.
I have been running with lowered graphics options and capped at 60. Game runs smoothly at highest settings or medium or low makes no difference. Not getting high temps. Last few crashes were in game play not menu. No logs.

Latest Nvidia driver, Windows 11

No idea what's causing it but it's really consistent

If you run the game in Steam it should use DX11. You can try to force it to use DX12 instead by starting ES2-Win64-Shipping.exe directly with command-line option -dx12.
You could also check Windows event log after crash if there is anything outstanding but this is usually not that easy to find out.

I've checked the event log a few times after crashes and not found much, but admittedly not an expert at that.

I have not yet tried to run it under dx12, I'll give that a shot and see if it makes any difference.

I love this game, played till the level cap on ver. 7 and want to play more, so bought it on Steam to keep up with progress, but I lose all the cool stuff I just got in a long fought battle nearly every time before I am allowed to save. Wish I could do more to help solve this bug, but there's just not much data to report back. Will report back if dx12 makes any difference.

I am also starting to look for any common thing between those having this crash. I doubt it's the NVME but I may try installing on a slower SSD just to see if that makes any difference. It wouldn't be the first game that I have seen that prefers one type over another, although usually it's the opposite and it runs better on the faster drive.

No, we don't know why this is happening for a handful of people, like mentioned earlier, I assume that this is due to some change in Unreal Engine 4.27 compared to 4.26. But without any crash message it's very hard to tell. I've got a feeling that it's a driver-thing or a conflict with another software, very hard to tell
