Co-op would require MAJOR reprogramming of big parts of the Game and also Server-infrastructure on the Dev's side. Would be basically an entirely new Game.
Lol the crybabies will be all over you now.
Hey there.
Couple of reasons for not having co-op in our game which was mostly due to the cost of development as well as the time taken to produce a multiplayer game.
We're not a massive studio by any stretch and for us to produce a game of the size of Everspace 2, even without co-op, took many years of development and a lot of monetary cost, so for us the additional development time and financial implications weren't feasible 8 years ago when ES2 started development.
During planning, you have to outline desires and goals within your budgetary restraints and that culminated in ES2 being a single-player focused action looter shooter as that's what the studio could essentially afford to create at the time. Even Indie projects stretch into seven figure plus territory so financial responsibility is paramount when developing a game, so whilst to the layman it may appear like it's an easy thing to create, it's never simply adding a mod into a game engine and "voila" - multi-player, there's much more to consider.
Lastly, EVERSPACE 2 fully launched in 2023 and was in Early Access prior to that.
You're welcome.
We do hear the call for co-op etc, and I take note of player desires and suggestions, it's just not feasible for ES2 unfortunately.
Just finished the Demo and really enjoyed it. Came looking for an answer to this topic as it would have been great to play with friends, I am disappointed it will never get co-op but I understand the balancing act between scope and budget is a difficult one.
Will follow what you do in future updates and also hope you can add co-op in ES3.
I backed it on KS for both games and I know they did not plan co-op for either only ES2 could have made sense, but I can still hope something changes.
I could see a co-op where you keep the XP/credits crafting material (all dual dropped so you are not hurting your friend) and blueprints you earn with friends working well. Have Hive pilot a "remote operation drone fighter" to help you but it is really the co-op player.
Heck if it is Hive he can talk smack on the person piloting his ship. "Sorry I seem to be unable to shoot slow weak targets. Either my aim protocols are damaged or I secretly want you to die. It is probably the aim thing."
Good for you, buddy!
