Shame, but fair enough
HOSAS - God Tier. I bought a set literally today with this game being one of the main reasons why. It takes some customising of button layouts but my god, what a difference is makes. How HOSAS is such a different experience from HOTAS is not something I expected.
I've never used HOSAS before but I think I get it.
There's one dedicated throttle on the market that has a "stick" function (VKB Space throttle). It looks very cool, but when I look at how people use that compared to how they use a second stick, they're visibly more comfortable and manipulating the ship with far more ease on HOSAS. The throttle is a nice idea for role play, but for functionality in space sims I think it needs a design rethink.
I setup a Gunfighter MKIV and STECS SCE with Everspace 2.
It has been amazing. I have more than enough buttons, to the point many are unbound, so this instantly invalidates the selected answer without room for debate.
With regards to M&K vs HOTAS or HOSAS: how comfortable are you with either? I've been playing FPS since CS pre Steam and have ZERO HOTAS experience.
The transition from M&K to HOTAS has been similar to my experience from controller to arcade stick. It starts pretty rough, where I have to think about what button to push, freeze during high stress situations, and drop combos/ram into walls.
Arcade stick is SIGNIFCANTLY more versatile and in some cases superior to controller (combo fighters by ArkSys.) I am beginning to experience the same thing with HOTAS as I literally have more modes of input to control the ship (both wrist, all fingers, thumb stick.)
Compare the above to my experience with sim racing where I already have habits from irl: controller is straight inferior to a sim rig.
And finally, I just feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong using M&K to control a space ship, similar to why I don't play arcade racing games anymore unless there's wheel support.
So, in conclusion, HOTAS when setup correctly will be better than M&K from both an immersion and functional perspective.
I don't enjoy playing space or flight games without at least one of the options. Even if Everspace isn't really designed for them it works and feels good to me.
The learning curve is stupid high, especially with the left hand due to throttle control + hover and strafe. I highly recommend HOSAS or something like a STECS SCE. Even with the SCE I've had to bind different buttons to hover and strafe due to wrist strain. If you have a throttle and there's a thumb stick on it, use the thumb stick for hover and strafe!
I don't know if this game was designed for joysticks or not but it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast!!
