Oldschool design ethos, oldschool release ethos, oldschool player curve. Games don't need to drag on forever
Its a Storygame, it has a Beginning and an End. Game sold over 400.000 copies to my knowledge... but its still a Storygame with an End. You will most likely see another Spike, when the next DLC drops.
So is a game launches SP or not and is dead, lacks players, the dev team and publishers are not going to continue to fix the game, update, make dlc, free or paid, expansions etc, they jump boat, fire the producer, shut down and move on... Dragon Age Veilguard is a pure example of this most recently, so again why do people thin,k its OK and doesn't harm a SP game is it has 3 people playing?
You can't compare Veilguard (Bioware/EA) with Everspace (Rockfish). You're comparing a huge corporation with a small independent development team. Rockfish has already sold enough to give us patches and a DLC and another is already in the works.
It might matter if we're talking about the possibility of Everspace 3, so rather than complain about the low numbers, get busy letting all your friends know they are missing a great game and should be playing. That's a win-win for you and Rockfish.
Still getting regular updates 2 years after release.
AAA is dead because AAA is a dumb business model. Spending 100s of millions isn't necessary for a good game, especially if you're using an off the shelf engine.
Explanation because i have thought about this.
This is a small company who have written Everspace 1 and now 2. The player numbers while small doesn't reflect the passion we have for the game or the Dev's have and the DLC's are brilliant. End game Incursions and Rift runs are brilliant.
When you consider the game has many ways to play, Multiple ship options, The huge amount of variations in ship upgrades, force multipliers from the bonus item stats, how you allocate your perks, your build opportunities are huge.
Then there are the difficulty levels. I've started the game fresh to play each of the difficulty levels. The game play is not the same rinse and repeat.
Titans came out after i had hit 30 so i started again because it kicked in at around L 15. That made the game play so much more competitive as i had to weave doing Titan and Leviathan missions around the main story line. Believe me that was not easy on an under powered out gunned ship. I really had to step up my game.
Tell me what AAA game company would seamlessly do this for an expansion and not have it destroy the main game story line.
To experience all of this you have to play the game not look at stats.
I played WoW for 15 years and in a hard core raiding guild. By hard core i mean 7 days a week prepping for 8 hour raid times 3 days a week, learning how to defeat bosses, Who to sacrifice when taunting and the multiple runs to gear up everyone so we could go to the next instance. Each expansion from Wrath onwards destroyed your epic sets with the first green that dropped. That was a grind.
This game doesn't do that. It's fun and exciting and if you treat it with respect it will do the same back to you.
If you took say 1000 gamers and asked them what they hate most about RPGs or Space games, about %80 of what they would answer would be in this game.
For example
Bugs bugs and more bugs
A loot and shoot rewards system that is more frustrating than fun
Random attributes on items you can't craft for
Extremely annoying characters you can't kill
Puzzles you have to complete to move on that are nearly impossible without cheating when you just want to fight.
Items get stuck or lost in terrain
Boss fights early on you can't win unless you figure out "the trick"
Extremely unbalanced leveling and mission difficulties. The first 12 levels I found hard but doable with online help when I got stuck on a puzzle. After about level 20ish I bought a level 4 Striker and had to crank it up to Nightmare because the game was way too easy
"SPOILER" An endgame battle that was worse than some free android apps. Most people wanted an epic battle with there clone and what we got was a chase with him throwing trash at us. BOOOORRRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGG
So why did I play almost 2000 rifts so far?
They got the combat just the way I like it on Lunacy 2000. And if I want it to be harder I just create my own challenges like"
Vanguard
No legendaries
No relequaries
No Shield of any kind
No Armor
No Teleporter
*cough cough* aim assist on default lol
And after the 2nd or 3rd .... dozen time trying to win I'll finally get it and stand up in my office, dancing around chanting
I AM THE CHAMPION!!!! I AM THE CHAMPION!!!!!
ya I guess this game isn't for everyone
