Location challenges not updating

i complete a minor location 100% but it only sometimes adds to my total.

I've completed 7 with the tick marks showing it's done, but it still says 4/10.

Challenges are like the side missions in an area, like finding a specific loot crate, solving a puzzle, or defeating a tougher than normal enemy in the area. Simply 100% an area is not the challenge.

[Edit] After rereading your comment, I may have misunderstood your question. If you are talking about the objectives associated with a challenge like for the Ceto Explorer Challenge where it says to "Complete 10 Location Challenges", that means completing 10 location challenges within Ceto. There's an "explorer" challenge for every system and location challenges only count within the system they are completed in. Does that answer your question?

I initially thought you were talking about 100% completing zones. Check marks do not indicate that a zone is 100% complete. Check marks indicate that the location objective has been completed if there is one. So just because you have 7 check marks that doesn't mean that you have 100% completed 7 zones. Early on the only way to know that you have 100% completed a zone is that you will be informed when it happens. Later in the game you'll get a perk that will allow you to see on the map the percent complete of every zone. You can go back to those zones that you have not 100% and complete them at that time. Later in the game you will also get additional perks that will help you see what you have completed within a zone and what you are missing to get 100% and also a perk to help you locate all the hidden areas within a zone. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about 100% zones for the time being, wait till the end game to try to do that when you'll have additional tools to help you.

For example take a look at the below screenshot of one of my games with the perk that shows the percent complete of every zone. You can see that some zones have a check mark but are not 100%.

Below is a screenshot of one of the zones that's not 100% and shows what I have completed and what I have not. You'll also notice that this location doesn't have a check mark, but that's because it doesn't have a location challenge, not because I have not completed it.
