Maybe i should try ES2 later :)
Google up "FREELANCER DISCOVERY MOD" a website has the link to the ISO file. it also has the mod which adds many many new ships and new systems. (Get help if you don't know what an ISO file is or how to burn one and use it, Knowledge is aquireable(sp).)
Freelancer can ALSO be played with LIVE PEOPLE via that mod. (I don't as I prefer the Singleplayer aspect).
The very cool thing about FREELANCER is since it was done in DX9 it Scales up with new machinces and looks GREAT. (in my opionion.).
With regards to THIS game however; I (suspect) that a 3rd version if it manifests itself will be a much closer homage to Freelancer than this (puzzle heavy) linear (but Pretty) game.
Kind regards to all who share my world views,

In RGO, you have forward/backward thrust and boost.
In ES2, you have that AND directional thrusters.
Gameplay becomes very different because of that.
In RGO they even had to create an "auto-follow" button, because it was that hard to dogfight and pursuit an enemy around.
RGO style is definitely more retro. Even more than Freelancer. RGO goes more on the style of wing commander privateer. Combat is fun, the weapons and explosion effects are gorgeous.
It was made with Ogre 3d engine, so it's more permissive and playable on low end pcs.
ES2 pushes all to the max, and is better played on modern machines.
I have both games, and love them both.
In what regards RGO though, Travis put there a hell of a ship painter mode, and they are going to release a modkit. And Gentlemen, Mods, are known to keep games alive for a lot more time, and add more value to it.
You have just describe "Marriage" yes, it would be "nice" to have some "strange" but as long as the "lifepartner" is OK, you need to be happy with it.
Just like with "Jagged Alliance 2", Freelancer (Discovery Mod) has (as of yet), no equal not in terms of game play.
Elite (lied about singleplayer, they are Dead to me), X2/3/4, just never gives me the singleperson open sandbox vibe, Star Citizen (to whom I threw away $X,XXX.XX) and now might never see my (Promised Singleplayer "Slice of the Verse" to SELF HOST), leaves me with the "dated graphics" but STELLAR Gameplay which is Freelancer (Discovery Modded).
I again, state it is my hope the Devs (here) are pondering a ES3 game and what it could be like.
Kind regards to all who share my world views,
Trentscousin
Starpoint Gemini 2 and Warlords are similar to Freelancer, but the Universe isn't as alive.
3 got terrible reviews, so...
RGO unfortunately is impossible to play on keyboard and mouse and main programmer Travis left the company so modkit never left.
