How do you find ore and stuff, like iron?

I found it by happenstance and just doing random pop up missions, jobs etc. But is there a place where I can mine it?

you will have to mine it, you are correct, just look around asteroid in mission map, I usually do this every time I have finished a mission on the map, go straight around asteroid and fly around, you will eventually see the mining sopt poping up on your screen, the range of dectection depends of your sensor strengh.

While exploring locations the ore deposits will pop up on your HUD if you fly near them. Large asteroids, wreckage and caves are often worth taking a closer look at. :)

I'd also like to mention we have a plan to focus types of ores and resources to be more prominent in specified map regions (i.e. Hinterlands more prominent in crystals, Deep Fields more prominent in ores, etc.), so that trade lanes and markets will make more sense. Currently, the G&B stations offer more ores in the Deep Fields. Is it currently in the plans to adjust and add to this in the future.

Unknown signals can also be a good source for mining. However, in the current state of the game, it's not really needed as there is usually plenty of stuff available elsewhere. And remember that mineable resources also respawn/are regenerated after some time.
