That's a really nasty showstopper - after more than 30 minutes still not in the correct position - that spoils my mood.

Try to separate horizontal and vertical rotation. This means first rotate left or right till you reach the strongest signal, then rotate up or down and look for the strongest signal. That's how i do it.
