Open world?
Is this an open world game where I can take off from one planet and fly to another manually (if I wanted to)?

Each location is basically an arena, and you have the ability to leave those locations and fly to any other (assuming story progress isn't blocking you) whenever you want.

Thank you for the quick reply. But I'm wanting to know if traveling from one location to another has to be done in some menu or map screen, or if I can fly there seamlessly without that.

While in a location, you stare out into open space and warp out, leading to a loading screen. Then you'll appear in open space where you can fly around freely to any location in the system. You'll likely use the map to set a waypoint, or you'll see relevant locations like those that have quests in them. When you want to enter a location, you activate autopilot to fly to the location and enter it, leading to another loading screen, and that leads to being in the area you flew to.

Sounds pretty close to me! I'm considering getting the game (will try the demo first), but I wanted to make sure it didn't feel too much like just a series of relatively small atmospheres, with loading screens in between them all.

Honestly, that is pretty much how it works.

But yes, the demo will give you a good idea of whether you'll like it or not.

There is basically an "overworld" map which is light speed travel. Its blended very well with the game and it feels immersive so I would definitely call it a true open world.

Good to know. I'm mainly interested in it for immersion's sake.

There are plenty of videos on you tube watch some of those as well.
Also a hour Dev stream every single Friday.
This one is from last Friday.

No, there are boundary limits in each loadable area. You cannot even fly straight out of a hangar for five minutes before you run into a forced cutscene where your ship turns around to keep you "in bounds." Worst possible implementation for a space game.

I appreciate you telling me. I don't suppose you would know of a game that does this better, while still being fairly easy to learn? I hear that Elite Dangerous is hard to really get into.

Hard to find one showing exactly what I'm looking for. Does the free demo involve traveling between locations by any chance, so I could just see it for myself?

didnt play it myself, but based on the achievement problems that a few player have, Supralight-Flight should be part of the Demo, yes.
Get the Demo, jump right into the Game and let yourself be surprised :)
thats what a Demo is for... a quick look into a Game.

Yes. The free demo lets you do everything except leave Ceto. What you are talking about is traveling from 1 location within a system (like Ceto) to another location within that same system.

Below is an example at 26:20 of a recent dev stream if you don't want to download the game just to see that. You'll see him engage the jump drive to leave the current location and a blank screen with white diamonds at the bottom shows for just a second and then a couple of navigation points pop up as he's in SupraLite travel mode. He chooses one of the nav points and then hits the button to enable auto pilot and the ship navigates to that new location. When he reaches the new location there's another brief blank loading screen with white diamonds at the bottom again for a few seconds and then then he's at the new location. So there's a very short loading screen going into Supralite travel from a location and then coming out of it again into a new location.

The player doesn't actually do any of the piloting though you simply engage Supralite travel, pick the new location and then engage the auto-pilot and wait till you get to the new location. That's traveling from 1 location to another, simple and straight forward. If immersion is what you are looking for, this is probably not where you are going to find it. It's not that type of game. It's a looter/shooter. Focus is on the combat and exploration is within each location, not getting from 1 location to the next. There are a number of new locations that can be discovered as you play and you can navigate to them and random new locations can also pop up while in Supralite travel, but again getting from 1 location to another is not really a big part of the game, it's what happens within a location that's important.

Thanks for the information! And I'm guessing that, while in outer space (between locations), you can't manually fly to any of the locations either? Also, can you think of any games that do this seamlessly (still with a cockpit view) but aren't too complicated to learn?

Honestly, everything else about this game looks amazing, I'll probably try the demo either way.

You can navigate to any location, meaning that you can pick any location on the map and mark that as your destination and it will show up as a nav point and you can then auto-pilot to that location. You can't manually fly to any location, no. You will never actually get to any location if you don't engage the auto-pilot to that location, you'll just fly right on past it and keep going.

You should. The game is terrific.
