From my limited testing I found it completely useless on very hard difficulty, but perhaps it's decent on normal.
How far into the game are you? I mean, can you afford to buy a ship without having to sell your current one? If so, then just buy a Vindi, test it out and see how it goes!
1) i like drones help auto attack enemies, but they only start when enemy in range like 800
2) many times, drones help take aggro of enemies away
cons:
1) ship not agile, when fighting enemies with high accuracy like ancient warden, i died alot, especially against grp of redeemer
2) healing up drones become a chore, unless u can get a ship with drone hp regen
3) doing high risk combat is really a challenge, as becoming rely on drones, they can go down fast due to swarm or explosive, then u find suddenly all enemies fires are on u
But for leveling, doing campaign etc, I think it might be the best ship. I tried switching to a II+ bomber from my old I+ Vindi... ran one mission and immediately rushed back to the store to trade back to my old Vindi. Luckily it was still there. Bomber felt like a wet paper towel by comparison. (EDIT: This was playing Hard difficulty.)
Ok, this I needed to hear! I was always reluctant to try out new ships. Although I did notice the shop will keep my old ship in stock for a while, even with my custom paint job
The only drawback to Vindicators is that they struggle against boss fights.
And no, I don't struggle in boss fights, I just heal my drones lol. Most boss fights have ways to generate wreckage anyways, like turrets on the ship, or minions with them.
I run Flak for long range, and random things like sync pulse or scattergun for short range, I run web or emp missiles, some kind of way to control my enemies, I run EMP pulse, healing on damage thing and the speed boost as devices. Healing on damage is to heal my drones, emp pulse is for control and AOE damage, and the speed boost is to put distance between me and enemies when things get rough. I then use marksman flak to outrange them.
With the Doctor's perks, you can spec so your nanobots heal allies ie: drones, you can spec the heal on hit device so it heals your allies too. Add the ult on top of that, your drones rarely ever die.
At this point, I have the II+ vindicator, has 6 drones, is basically unkillable even when under heavy fire. Someone is outmaneuvring you ? Speed boost out of there and range them, but if you can take the heat, drones will eventually take it down.
Disclaimer: Am nowhere near an expert at this game, I have like 20 hours at this point, but feels like this game is really easy with this setup lol, too easy.
