the story is centered on Adam Roslin and his background as a clone that took very specific actions in the first game. None of the story would make sense as a custom character

Adam is the protagonist but technically speaking that's not your character. Actually your character is the ship that Adam Pilots. You acquire gear for the ship. Your ship holds stuff in it's inventory. You buff the ship. You upgrade the ship. Your attributes change based on which ship you choose. Your ULT ability is determined by the ship you choose. You customize the ship's look. For all intents and purposes you are playing as the ship and Adam is your Pilot. There's no particular reason that your character in an ARPG has to be a person, could be a ship. This is something that I actually love about Everspace 2, that it breaks the mold a bit.

Someone in the suggestions forum suggested being able to name your ship and I think that's a terrific idea and would further the idea that your character is actually the ship.
