Connections to Everspace 1?

For anyone who has played E1, does it have a connected plot or plot elements in E2? Can someone who has never seen E1 fully enjoy E2?

ES1 is just backstory for ES2. You do not have to play ES1 to play ES2. You will however notice a lot of familiar faces in ES2 if you played ES1.

I only played a few hours of 1 but in 2 you play as the same guy directly after its events, and it looks like the big bad evil organization hunting you is the same in both games.

In addition to what Pappy said it's a very different game too. The first was more of a rogue-like game and this one they've fully fleshed it out into a story driven space arpg. I personally think there's no need to play the first game and starting with this one is completely fine.

You don't need to play ES1. It is the same main character and there are some same factions and minor flashbacks.
