Not really the focus of the game. The commodities buying/selling was a means to allow players to optimise their income, rather than it becoming a job as the focus is still on shooting & looting.

If you do find a good trade route between systems for various commodities, then it can be a lucrative way to earn more credits, but it's not a focus.

i dont know, man. you say that but im looking at some of those goods and theyre worth up to twice as much as their lowest buying point when you can sell them at maximum profit. some of the higher rarity ones look even better.

i guess it entirely depends how the scaling is, and if you reach a point where you can buy out a trader, if the amount of profit is still noticable later on.

but it looks like it could be fun for a while.

What Geekbyte is trying to point out is that the game wasn't designed with the idea that you would be running trade routes, but that doesn't mean you can't. You certainly can make a LOT of credits buying low and selling high, especially later in the game when you open up all the locations and you get access to better ways to move around the systems. They are not discouraging you from doing that.

Reminds me of days I spent playing Freelancer or other old space sims, with scraps of paper and notes trying to find the best trade routes and whatnot. I have no doubt that info on lucrative trade routes is being compiled and published somewhere, but it's fun to find out on my own too. That being said, they've got a super-solid foundation for the game, more detailed systems like expanded trade can be added on later if the developers wish.

Now I know why I should have been attracted like crazy by this game, but at the end I am not, it's looking like a shooter. I will have to wait for September...
sigh...

Is the trading economy dynamic? Do lucrative trade routes change over time or are all the prices static based on location?

Not dynamic. As I mentioned earlier it was an addition to allow players to earn a few more credits by finding some lucrative runs, but we're not into simulator territory, just a nice extra feature.

I completely understand the focused dynamic of the game. Still think I might try just doing some trading when available. It might fun, and profitable too.

You want X4 if you want a proper space trading game

It's a really good game though with lots of content and mods open up even more content. Bit of a learning curve at the start. Everspace 2 is more polished and combat focused.

Yeah it's in the game but it'd be really boring if that's all you do because there's practically no risk save for the 2 or 3 raiders that sometimes hang out within a few km of the gates. Like Geekbyte said, it's a nice income supplement to pick up cheap goods if you have the cargo space because you're always going to eventually make a profit if you're going to different sectors. But if you focus exclusively on trading you're just flying back and forth because there's no market simulation and no piracy. Luckily you can dismantle loot for parts while exploring (as long as you have a cargo module which only takes an hour or so from the beginning of the game to get one) so cargo space usually isn't an issue.

i mean. this should be really easy additions to this game though, if theyre willing to do this in a future update.

they could add a few ships with tons of cargo space and lower defenses, and firepower for trading, or just make some of the G&B ships that NPC's are already using available for purchase by the players.

then a few price fluctuations shouldnt be hard to do either. maybe add a few random events for heavy price drops or increases on certain goods.

and random pirate assults with increasing chance the more valuable cargo youre carrying should also be possible.

the more complex stuff would be to establish your own mini mining outposts and refineries for resource generation, and processing before youre shipping them.

That just happens to be the current price. If you look at the sale history it looks like 60% off every month or two.

New DLC drops next week so look out for a sale if you are interested in the game. Base game sales usually follow relase of a DLC.
