This game checks all the boxes for mod support. It's still a good game without it, but I'd still absolutely love to do something about getting flashbanged by a lot of effects. As in killing it alltogether. Yes, the cruise jump, the ship specials, the weapons, explosions, ship modules, all of it needs either an ingame option or a mod to just kill it.
This means that, 2 years from now, with Starfield being heavily modded, no one will care anymore about this game.
Imagine the possibilities though!
Why, Pappy? Because it's Bethesda?
You say its "nice to have, but not planned". What would be the Requirements for implementation? I have read that you're working on the Console-Version right now, so i understand that this is your Focus right now, next to Bug-Fixes. Thats normal for a Game that got released not long ago. I saw a Thread where a MacOS User asks, if your Game will be on that System too.
Could you provide a rough roadmap of "if this happens, we can do that"?
Personally, im not creative enough to imagine what kind of Mods would/could improve your Game to a degree, where sharing your Tools for Mod-support would be justified.
Thing is, modding could be enabled for only QOL things, or go as far as bethesda, and let it be anything, assets, textures, 3d models, animations and so on, if that were to happen this game would get new spaceships, new game modes, new story, new planets, maybe even better flying physics.
Basically it comes to general feel of the game. Starfield to me looks very similar to No Mans Sky. I played that and I enjoyed it for about 10 hours or so maybe and then I was bored. Typically speaking I'm more of an action person than an explorer person. I'm not really interested in seeing what's out there. I prefer my games to be about the action. Starfield might have enough of that for me, but I kinda doubt it. I've heard that most of the worlds do not contain hostiles, it's more just exploration, gathering materials, construction of items, etc. I can take that stuff in small doses, but it doesn't last. If you build your game around that I won't be playing it for long. Now if you build your game around the action and have some other stuff to do as well like ES2 does, then that's my jam.
Another game that I might compare it to would be Subnautica and again I did enjoy Subnautica until I got so far and then got bored. Again maybe 10 to 15 hours or so into the game when I had basically rounded up enough stuff to make most of what was needed to begin the exploration part of the game and then I just lost all interest. Too much down time for me. Too much piecing together a story. I'm not a story person unless it's not the main point of the game. Again compare it to Everspace where there is a story, but it's not the main focus of the game it's more just a nice aside to the main point of the game which is the action.
So technically it has nothing to do with Bethesda, but at the same time it has everything to do with Bethesda as they are more the story folks then the action folks. If Bungie was making it, then I might be interested. I love Destiny 2 for instance.
I would absolutely LOVE for Blizzard to make a space game. They would be so freaking good at it and they already have the built in space motif in Starcraft. I had a lot of interest in Starcraft: Ghost but that was canned. Then they said they were making another MMO which I thought might be in space, but unfortunately that got canned as well and then they make Overwatch. Overwatch is not bad, but I'm not really into PVP. I'm too old to be competitive anymore. I got to have a PVE space to play in where I can play the way I want and not locked into the meta to compete.
Just my $0.02
Personally, i love Subnautica. Very relaxing, peaceful Game :D But i generally like exploring, so its easy to understand why i like Subnautica.
The kinda odd exception is Destiny 2. Nobody knows why, but i like that Game.
