That T.Flight HOTAS x is iirc basically a controller, so you might be fine with just using it as such. iirc it's a ps3 / xbox controller (depending on the specific model) that works on pc too.
The joystick input detection for DirectInput devices seems a bit spotty. No idea if it's ES2 or Steam causing the issues, but try looking into vJoy, Joystick Gremlin, XOutput, and similar software to config your stick globally as a Xinput device and it should work in pretty much every game. That's how I'm getting my stick setup to work with ES2 - otherwise it doesn't register any inputs.
Try HOSAM setup. You can have the fun and precision in movement of flying with a stick, but WITH the lightning fast target acquisition of a mouse.
I honestly felt the movement to be more precise with mouse and kb than with my hotas.. it's weird, it just feels sluggish and unnatural somehow. Surprised me since games like Elite and Squadron work perfectly fine with a hotas :-/
Yeah Hosam is pretty often a good choice when your guns are not fixed or auto-aiming.
BTW Xinput has the huge disadvantage of only supporting basically what a xbox controller has.
4 axis, 10 buttons, 2 triggers and a 8 directional pad. A lot of sticks have more than just 4 axis alone and some people like to combine their throttle with their stick into one device too.
Anyway OP, good luck with getting your stick to work.
Well, I felt that way when trying to aim using stick, but strafing/hover seems to be fine. Same for rolls, using keyboard controls for rolling resulting in MUCH too rapid a roll for my comfort.
Agree, Xinput has limitations, but I have yet to find a game that detects my DirectInput devices out of the box. Even playing some older games like Descent on a modern engine port, the underlying SDL/SDL2 module only seems to pickup Xinputs! At least some games allow for multiple controller support so you can use two virtual Xinput devices to get more than 4 axis... but I digress.
Hopefully OP finds a control scheme they can enjoy!
I guess I could play with a mouse/keyboard but it kind of seems a crime not to use a joystick in a space sim.
