Inertia Dampeners
This doesn't appear to be a very commonly known feature, but since it's sort of hidden, someone could play the entire game without even knowing about it. It isn't actually mapped to any key/button by default, and as far as I'm aware, neither Everspace 1 or 2 ever really explain it anywhere.

Inertia Dampeners do as the name suggests and make your ship act like there's friction in space. Makes driving much easier. Turning them OFF makes your ship act more like an object in space would, sort of. Map it to a key, I use Z, and try it if you haven't and test it out.

By doing this you can boost in one direction, turn your Inertia Dampeners OFF, and continue in that direction and speed while your boosters recharge and you can swivel around and fire at pursuers, etc. Very handy. Makes Gunships more useful also.

There's added bonuses to this.

It works with your Cruise Drive. Activate your Cruise Drive (upgrade it so it takes less than a second), turn OFF your Inertia Dampeners, drop the Cruise Drive and you can fly around a battlefield VERY quickly, while firing. Nice!

Another bonus. WEBBING DEVICES DON'T WORK ON YOU while your Inertia Dampeners are OFF. I'm not sure if this is by design or not but it's pretty handy if you start mastering the maneuver.

That's all for today!

Screenshot is done with Z + F10, aren't cancelling that out by using dampeners with it? :steamhappy:

My version of the game came with Z mapped to Photo Mode for some reason, which vaguely annoyed me so put it somewhere else and made Z my Inertia Dampener toggle for easy access :D

I map it to a mouse side button and use it all the time.

It's hidden very good. Looked for Inertia Dampemers last night to set a keybind and can't find it.

It seems out of place considering how AI behaves and how arcady the game is in general imho.

It was indeed added as an option for players to experiment with and evolve a flight style that might suit their playstyle/ship.

Certainly isn't for everyone (even I don't use them) but it's cool to have and hence why it's not bound to any key by default.
makes sense that the webbing wouldnt work, after all its not real webbing just some kind of program, which would mean that its interacting with the inertia dampeners to hold you in place.

1- you can use dampeners off to conserve boost energy. dampeners on to brake, dampeners off+boost tap to quickly change direction.
2- you can mix dampeners off+energized boost to cross the whole area at ludicrous speed.
3- dampeners off+harpoon+boost tap breaks the ship's speed limit. You can fly at speeds above max boost, even when flying a gunship.

When's the press to hold dampener on/off going to be added?

I'd like to play the game with the dampener's off 80% of the game and then use "space brakes" for combat maneuvers n such.

A universal option is to use a keybinding program like reWASD or scripting software like Autohotkey, depending on what control peripherals you are using. And lots of gaming mice/keyboards have some built-in ability to do this. If you are using a controller or mouse, for example, in reWASD you can set a "Start Press" trigger to activate your inertial toggle, and a "Release Press" trigger to activate it again. So let's say in-game you have Mouse 3 bound to toggle Inertial Dampeners and you run with it off by default. You can set it so that pressing down on Mouse 3 just toggles it on, and it remains on while you hold the button and perform your maneuver, then when you release the button, it toggles it off again.

Tilde is a good option if you don't want to use z

That is an external option, but I really do not like installing 3rd party software like this because of all the other advert spyware ♥♥♥♥ that comes with it.

Fair enough to be concerned about random shady software, but the most popular applications in these categories are highly regarded and do not contain spyware/ads. reWASD is completely free of that, and requires a license only for their advanced features.
