Is there a point to picking up scrap metal?

I'm not sure what I need scrap metal for. I have tons of it and there seems to be an overabundance of it everywhere, but no scrap metal sink. Is there some sort of way to pay to convert it to something useful? Or am I missing the obvious?

Just one of the many resources you'll eventually have more of than you'll ever know what to do with.

Scrap is the base material. Its used for different Components from Common to High Quality (Supra-Gel for example). These Components are needed to craft other Items.

Crafting but yeah there comes a point where picking them up will be useless.

Honestly, I was doing that too, I thought I was crazy. A HUD filter (like many games have loot filters) would be nice. I'd like to turn scrap and some other things off

As a quick note, scrap metal in space is one of the ways you are subtly told "Hey, there's something interesting here" for secret stashes and so on.

True, but they also spray all over after destroying space station equipment and other destructible bits.

What you say is another reason to pick up everything that drops as loot, so you know where you have explored vs have not explored.
