Play with friend ?

Hello, I want to play with a steam friend, but against 3 or 4 AI that will be kinda boring.
So, we decided to go online against other players. We don't want to be secretly allied and cheat, anyway I fear that, as we are steam friends, a player think that we are cheating.

My question is simple : can I play with him with random players or are we only allowed to play "play with friend" mode against AI ?
