in response to the OP.
indeed, this is what people refer to as, cubeworld 2.0. its on a 64 bit code base so it can perform better, in which, it definently does.
but gameplay is overhauled beyond alpha recognition. with pieces of what was teased for reworks to the game with a brand new progression system no one knew about till the beta dropped.
you are now caught up.
I'm an old Alpha player, and I, too, felt the same way. But, after giving it a shot, it's endearing in it's own way. (I would like for them to have both Beta and Alpha as game modes, b/c I do like Beta now, but do like the old Alpha play style, too.)
Alpha = RPG mode
Beta = Adventure mode
In Beta...
* you start with your skills, so no mucking around with min/max'ing them.. you can just use them, and thus player skill is more important now (using which skill and when to manage fights)
* XP progression is gone.. now it's more about gear progression.. it's a loot hunt now. The zones are more forward in letting you know what order to progress through the zone's quests, b/c they color-code the areas to let you know the kind of gear you need to hit them.
* The start of the game can be very sluggish, b/c you'll feel like enemies are very OP. They are.. b/c gear is how you "level up" your character. You'll start off with missing gear slots (eg: might not have any gloves, or boots or what-not). First priority is to go get some money to buy some stuff from shops or craft it to fill in those missing gear slots.
* This gives you a good opportunity to wander around and explore. Talk to NPC's to unlock areas to explore. Some will tell you about places to get the boat, harp, whistle, bell, etc. Go get those ASAP, b/c they not only help you get around (boat / glider), but there are towers that the harp / bell / whistle give you access to.. some of which contain money or leveled gear. You can often get this stuff w/o a fight.. so all it takes is just some early exploration.
* While you're out, look for the tiny (white cube on map) respawn spots, and unlock the ones you can. Those are very useful for teleporting all over the zone. (Again, this can be done w/o engaging enemies.. just have to go out and explore).
* After decking out in full white gear (and maybe getting lucky with some better gear drops in harp / bell / whistle towers), you can find white, 1-star quest locations to go tackle. Pick the ones where you can get an item (sword or armor icon), or free a gnome (to unlock green gear in shops) or unlock green crafting items (floating hammer symbol).
* Once you unlock some green gear in the shops and green gear in crafting, you'll hopefully have enough money and resources to be able to "level up" your gear to green.
* from there, you wash-rinse-repeat on quests of various levels ... progressiong through the green quests, then leveling gear to blue, then hitting blue quests.. etc, etc.. until you hit legendary gear.. and by then you're pretty much "god mode" in the region.
* After you've dominated the region for the most part, you can go do it to a new region. Each new region acts like a "new game+". Your awesome gear from one zone gets nerfed to white 1-star potency in a new zone. (You'll notice your stars on the gear are grayed out, which means they're nerfed). However, any gear with "+" next to it is not nerfed. So, you can keep using it.
* So, ultimately, while you are "resetting" your progress at a new zone, you are ultimately seeking out that rare "+" gear (especially legendary "+" gear) that you can use to make starting a new zone much easier.
I think the point of Beta was to have some kind of longevity in playing (hence the "+" gear collection, and artifacts giving minor buffs, plus you keep pets and potions and stuff)...but to make it where folks don't feel the need to wholesale slaughter everything they see to eek out some XP.
(But, it sort of backfires, b/c now everyone is slaughtering everything in order to find gear drops, leftover drops that can get identified into gear, and to sell it all off for money they can buy more gear from shops.)
Just take your time and give your first zone a good try. It took me some hours of skulking around and unlocking bell, harp, etc to finally get to more places and I started having fun.
When I hit a new zone and got nerfed, I got discouraged. But, when I started to find "+" gear, I actually looked foward to hitting a new zone now, b/c I knew I could start with an advantage.. and it's been pretty fun going forward.
The issue is then when you end up with a full-stack of "+" legendary gear... you've pretty much won the game, b/c there's not much the new zones hold for you.
Just give it a shot. Beta is endearing in it's own way. I hope Wollay decides to make CubeWorld have game modes, and both Alpha and Beta are selectable. I think folks are upset, b/c they see Beta now, and aren't sure if Alpha is dead and gone or coming back at all.
Just give them time to process feedback. Hopefully, Alpha will come back as a game mode. But, in the meantime, give Beta a fair chance.
