First, find respawn statues, that will help a lot if you want to travel quickly somewhere else (for free).
Find villages, talk to all NPCs you can, they will give you some quests marked on your map.
Book a flight if you have enough money so you can reach a quest faster. Don't forget to find a statue once you arrive, as you can easily get bored of respawning 3km away from where you died.
Always get resources when you find them, you will need them later for bosses.
Also try to learn about the different types of enemies and which one you should avoid, so you don't die over and over.

When you start off press M to open up the full map. Hover over where your character is and zoom out a little. You'll notice that you are in a zone (white borders). Each zone has it's own quests, ranging in difficulty from white > Green > Blue > Purple etc. These are the difficulty levels.

To start off wander around and fight white named monsters. While you do this forage for items to save up for crafting.

To progress what you want to do is find points of interest. You can find them yourself by stumbling upon them, or get markers put on your map by talking to NPC's. TALK TO ALL NPC'S YOU SEE!!!!

Start with white named points of interest, and work your way up the colored difficulties. Eventually you will complete all of the points of interest in a zone and will be able to locate the artifact(s).

Artifacts give permanent bonuses to your character and give you a level. These will carry over into new zones.

When you switch to a new zone you will notice your gear becomes grey gear, and is not so good. This is only true for non-plus gear. While you play through the zone you will slowly find plus gear and these can be used effectively across zones.

This game is about exploring and completing the zones you come across. Growing your gear, finding artifacts, and obtaining good plus gear. It is very hard in the beginning but you will get the hang of it quickly. It just takes one or two lucky drops from white quests to get off your feet :)

Some Tips
--------------
- You can fly to friends via the flight master in any town for free
- Press F1 to see your skills
- Villages look like multiple cubes of the same color on your map
- You can change sub-class in a village. Crown on the minimap in a village
- There are save points all around the map, and many other things to find. You'll quickly learn what these look like while exploring
- Middle mouse button puts a star on the map, and removes them. So you can make all the marks you want!
- Explore!

Ah, so there IS gear that carries into new areas. I'd wondered about that. Had heard as much, but hadnt figured it out yet (still have boatloads of things to do in the region I'm in).

And that... kinda makes it seem like the complaints about it might be a bit unfounded. Or just a lack of players actually understanding how the game works. I'd honestly say the game's real issue is a lack of explanation. I had a very hard time at first, died alot, got utterly annihilated by a witch, didnt know what to do.... but after a couple of hours of stubborn perserverance (probably spelled tha wrong), I went from "cant kill a fly without dying" to "defeated horrible witch boss, saved the town!" It took alot of experimentation and exploring different places and ideas.

I still have like 5 billionty quests to do, and the game is still very difficult, but that's a good thing in my book. It's a constant challenge, and I'm hoping it stays that way.

I will say this though: THE big important thing to do at first seems to be to get a pet. The whole game seems balanced around the idea of you having a pet to help in battle. It wasnt too hard to figure out how to do it, upon reaching a town and talking to NPCs, but... it'd be nice if some explanation had been given earlier.

The gear you are talking about requires 100% completion of the region and only carries over to the adjacent regions, not further regions. It takes less time to get gear in a new region than 100% a region to get +gear.
Not all the complaints are unfounded.
It doesn't feel like your character is progressing at all when you know it's going to be taken away. Once you've explored a few regions and each biomes, what will there be left to keep a player going if any progression they make is removed each time?

How to play Cube World Beta:

1. Attempt to gain new gear, dying several times in the process.
2. Enjoy your slow incremental improvement and mastery of the region
3. Travel to a new region to play with your friends
4. Realise all your items suddenly are useless as you've crossed over into a new kingdom and Wollay decided this means your literal legendary gear is now plastic and string instead of holy imbued metal.
5. Uninstall this disaster of a game and go play the alpha, which did progression in a much more enjoyable, gradual way and get sad that despite all the surface level improvements, the actual gameplay has gone downhill, not up.

Er....

If it actually works the way you say it does, then... progression isnt removed.

Why would it carry over into FURTHER regions beyond the next one? That wouldnt make sense. You just entered the next "level", so to speak. There are things to do there. You're not meant to skip it. Take that equipment from the area you were just in, that you earned through completion... and use it to get started completing the new area you just entered. THEN, go onto other ones, with further equipment earned from THAT completion.

Frankly I thought from the start that this design concept was pretty obvious... hell, alot of games do exactly that (many roguelikes, for instance). Where you're not meant to move on to new areas until you've done enough stuff in the current one, and only then can you truly progress. Try to go to new areas early, and you'll find yourself weak and sad compared to the threats that live there. It's not exactly a new concept.

If it takes less time to get new decent gear than to bring over +gear, then it sounds like they just need to alter the balance a bit, to encourage that 100% completion instead and make it feel more rewarding. Unfortunately, balance is *very* hard to get right in a game like this. It's likely to take a number of patches, to deal with something like that.

If people were to calm the funky hell down though and stop being jerks, it would likely be easier for the devs to get USEFUL feedback to deal with things like balance issues. The more people act like utter jerks, the longer it's going to take and the more wonky the process will be.

It takes a bit of time to farm for some + gear of the region you completed in to use in the next. And if you have friends to play with and go to their region, they'll most likely have gear for your class if it hasn't been thrown away or sold.

If you are lucky enough, you can craft one or two + gear, if you have the required material. Might not be blue, purple or yellow but it'll be enough to help you get started.
