How does the treasure spirit work?

I see it pop up near my character from time to time as if its pointing me to a direction, but once I get to where ever its pointing theres nothing there lol

It can be hidden. i fell trhough a hole in a mountian i never saw and there was a treasure box below. had to work like heck to get out of that situation but i got some gold out of it.

or could be above you as well.

yea I found it, but now I found another one thats in a tower with a gate on it and I have no idea how to open it lol

theres a spirit bell somewhere on the map. i found mine in a graveyard. i beileve that items allows through gates from what ive read.

The Spirit Bell will let you pass through gates that look kinda like prison gates. You can find a harp that will open up golden doors. Also in towers you can destroy the magic crystals to unlock barriers in ruins.

on 2 occasions I've had it tell me there was loot in one of those raised platforms of ground when there was no way to get in there and there was nothing on top

Mine keeps leading me to circles in the bottom of the ocean but there is no treasure. It's lead me to a chest on land but no clue with oceans.

Every instance where the Treasure Spirit showed up and pointed me toward a treasure chest it was above ground and a bomb was definitely needed. Haven't gotten anything underwater yet, so not sure if bombs work underwater.

Bombs work underwater, however if you are on a water map and it is pointing to the base of a pillar there is normally a walk through-able barrier at the bottom with a hidden chamber there. You can breath in there too. If you don't see a barrier and the water spirit is pointing to the base of the pillar under the water it means that it spawned under the ground and you can't get to it. It happens about 1 out of every 10 times that you can't access it. If it leads you right to the middle of the ocean area with "nothing there" there is normally a discolored circle on the ground maybe 3 times the size of the boat. That circle is bomb-able. and has treasure inside.

It happened to me twice in the same region. Can it be the case of having special items like the Harp there or just random loot?

well the spirit is pointing to a mountain like when i get to the top it points below me but i haven't found any bomb-able spot and when i am in the base it points a bit upward and to the center of the structure so idk

When you get roughly within 150 meters of things like treasure chests, gold bags, loot from stash sheds or bird islands, the treasure spirit should appear on screen and point you in the right direction.

a couple things to clear up here. first off, the treasure spirit doesn't "point" to treasure with the narrow end, it guides you to it. simply put, if you just keep walking towards the physical entity of the treasure spirit when it appears around you, you should find the treasure. the treasure will be either a bag of gold, or a random piece of equipment for your class- which may or may not be within a chest. it won't however help you find other nearby key items like the harp or anything like that which was a personal thought on my part at first. as for the islets in the ocean, there's always something there. if it's not on top, it's at the base. if it's not an openly visible air pocket, then it's hidden in a bombable surface at the base of the pillar on the sea floor. look for any inconsistency in texture and you'll find your bomb spot. it's highly recommended to use your lantern, but try not to get confused with darker spots due to shadows. i've gone through 8 ocean zones so far, and i've yet to find a single landmass that didn't have something for me.

As Rustoration pointed out, there are surfaces you can destroy with your bombs. These Surfaces look slightly different than the rest.

+1 this. Same for ocean zone. Got through many oceans and every land mass had something to offer me.
