It's mostly be lucky and don't be unlucky, but there are a few things you can do to bypass the first hurdle. Draw monsters into wandering groups of friendly adventurers for a chance at gear, (but mostly for free money) hunt neutral creatures that won't mob you, gather resources you don't need and sell them, focus on freeing gnomes to improve the village shops - adventurers might be able to help with that too.

Also consider installing the weapon xp mod. https://old.reddit.com/r/CubeWorld/comments/di4jfo/cube_world_modlist_megathread

The best two ways to get better weapons and gear are to buy them and to craft them yourself. Drops depend on RNG and all use a 25% drop chance ratio to determine whether the drop will be for a warrior, ranger, mage or rogue. Then there is a further RNG dice for the power level you will get, though if a mob or boss is of a certain power level then you will typically get drops of that same power level. You can use drops from bushes and leftovers to upgrade because you can get some good gear that way. Just don't rely on them because they obviously were not intended to be relied on.

In order to buy better weapons and gear, you need to rescue gnome traders. Each gnome trader rescue will have a different power level assigned to it. That means - if it is higher than your current level - you should not attempt it unless you are very good at combat. The same thing with the crafting books that let you craft better weapons and gear, though crafting books don't necessarily require any combat. You may just need to find the book itself. Though it is always wise to expect combat, anyway.

Best way is through exploration. Tree loot, buried treasure, sky islands, harp doors, and spirit gates can hold powerful items inside. Or they might hold a bag of gold. It's a good chance to get gold or purple gear but you might still get blue if anything. Items found this way are guaranteed to be usable for your class. Completing quests can also give rewards but as you might need a good weapon to defeat high level quests it might not be a possible avenue if the low level quests don't give a needed upgrade. Outside of that shop gnomes would probably be the next best method as they can give you a step by step increase. Crafting might be the most reliable method of getting gold gear but has a tedious grind associated with it. Not worth it unless you are desperate for better gear or have the option to make a + item. Just my take on it.

As was said when killing enemies they will tend to have loot drops similar of their power level. When it comes to humanoid enemies I see them sometimes drop the weapon they use. It does pose a problem that you need to be able to beat them but might it might give a bit better odds when it comes to loot. If you're desperate you can go into a dungeon. Enemies tend to be green and blue at the front but the real draw would be if you're lucky some loot rooms may have spawned near the entrance.

I like regions with 2 to 3 villages. Save 4 gnomes and you'll have a high chance to buy gear+ to be used for surrounding regions.

Followed by crafting gear+ recipes. For some reasons crafting book can be pretty generous with the amount of +recipes. Only go this route if you know the locations of at least 1 ore deposit of every type. Also mark every iron/cotton/web/bush you run by.

As I understood the question they're stuck trying to break out of the very beginning of the game and find even a green weapon. Crafting region+ gear and farming for legendaries is a little further along from there. I mentioned the mod because its primary function is to offer a simple alternative route around exactly this roadblock. (That route being: Hit some things a bunch.)

Actually, progress through the early game is quite easy. If you've got white gear, go for crafting books and rescue gnomes in areas with white names. Then buy green-tier gear. Then go for the gnomes and crafting books with green titles so that you can craft or buy blue-tier gear. And so on, until you get gold-tier gear.

The purpose of the unlock mod is not to aid in progression of the early game (you will be doing that, anyway, because the mod doesn't actually give you the gear). It is there so that you don't have to go through the entire thing again in the next region. Which, IMO, is rather boring because the rest of the game becomes way too easy that way. It is made for casual players who can't handle taking on matched mob and boss fights very well and thus tend not to enjoy that aspect.

Aside from the fact it is still buggy and unbalanced, the unlock mod is an okay temporary workaround, I guess, but the longevity of the game will suffer for you and those who use the mod will probably get bored with it pretty quickly. Use it if you want a shorter more casual experience. If you want the challenge of matched fights and you like starting over in new places then avoid it.

That sounds highly tedious to do step by step upgrades at the shop. Just saying.

I keep hearing buying / crafting is the fastest but I've yet to see a cheap craftable item that doesn't require an unrealistic amount of resources or any thing worth buying in shops when I check.

Easiest way to get gear and weapons is to find a town, talk to everyone, go do level 1 or 2 star quests, and normally you'll get at least 2 items that bump you up with some leftovers to identify. I've not had a problem yet and on my 4th region.

I agree with this. When I near the end of a region I'll buy purples from shops but the thought of buying new gear each step up sounds like a slow way to play. And crafting takes so much material I only get to craft a gold piece every few zones without spending time to grind for mats. I don't even wanna think about wasting mats crafting greens or blues.

In my experience the power level of the gear is usually one level above the mob, though I can only say that with a degree of certainty for boss mobs and it might be different for normal mobs.
Anyways, one pretty fast way is to craft the highest level gear you can craft (depending on crafting books and resources) and then hit mobs/quests of the same power level or one level above that, especially when comes to normal mobs, kill everything of the same power level as you, even if they don't drop loot for you, the loot they drop can be sold to get gold for gear at the shops.

You aren't going to get better gear any other way than to rely on the RNG-based drop rate. Atleast crafting and buying are reliable. And it is only really tedious when all of the challenge is removed and all you are left with is a fetch quest. Starting over in each new region makes you practice your combat skills in matched battle so that you actually get better at it rather than just hitting buttons like you would if you were maxed out in Legendary gear.

Yeah maybe. All I know is that fighting a mob or boss at my current gear level has rarely disappointed me. I can nerf the battle with my Quicksand ability if the boss is melee but ranged and mage bosses require me to make potions, which takes up a lot of the duration of my stay in the region. Melee bosses one level higher means I have the right weapons to wipe out everything my level or lower about twice as quickly so that makes up for the rest of it.

This is perhaps why I said "consider installing the weapon xp mod", which is ideally suited to that role.

And which makes more than half the game now completely redundant and that much shorter, not to mention that much more meaningless to play - the toughest mobs were made for level 6 so if you can get to level 5 with only one tier then you don't really need any of the other 3 tiers unless you're so bad at combat you need to one-shot a mob merely in order to avoid dying. Sheesh. No wonder the unlocking mod has balancing issues.

Anyone who wants an idle walking simulator is going to find a different game, anyway. Now the casuals are turning skill-based action games into walking simulators, too :steamsad:

Weren't you calmly explaining how alpha and release were tuned to different demographics a couple of days back, and that both play styles were valid? All games are meaningless, man, maybe don't stress that other people might be playing them *wrong*.

Yes I was, and yes I still do. I was lamenting the changes the mods were making to Cube World to make it into yet another completely different game, this time easier than both vanilla versions.

I was also (mostly) joking when I made that post. Mods are fine as long as you know what you are doing. Not my cup of tea, but whatever.

Not really "meaningless" but rather pointless. Many games can be quite meaningful if they affect you in the right way but their only purpose is to let you have fun. If they can't even do that then there is really no reason why anyone should bother with them. The joke was that - by taking all the fun of challenging myself out of Cube World - those two mods have ceased to make it much of an actual game (to me). Which is why I would question playing it unless you like a walking simulator with nice scenery. And nice music. But that is just me. Some people love walking simulators.

EDIT: Added two words.
