Also consider installing the weapon xp mod. https://old.reddit.com/r/CubeWorld/comments/di4jfo/cube_world_modlist_megathread
In order to buy better weapons and gear, you need to rescue gnome traders. Each gnome trader rescue will have a different power level assigned to it. That means - if it is higher than your current level - you should not attempt it unless you are very good at combat. The same thing with the crafting books that let you craft better weapons and gear, though crafting books don't necessarily require any combat. You may just need to find the book itself. Though it is always wise to expect combat, anyway.
As was said when killing enemies they will tend to have loot drops similar of their power level. When it comes to humanoid enemies I see them sometimes drop the weapon they use. It does pose a problem that you need to be able to beat them but might it might give a bit better odds when it comes to loot. If you're desperate you can go into a dungeon. Enemies tend to be green and blue at the front but the real draw would be if you're lucky some loot rooms may have spawned near the entrance.
Followed by crafting gear+ recipes. For some reasons crafting book can be pretty generous with the amount of +recipes. Only go this route if you know the locations of at least 1 ore deposit of every type. Also mark every iron/cotton/web/bush you run by.
The purpose of the unlock mod is not to aid in progression of the early game (you will be doing that, anyway, because the mod doesn't actually give you the gear). It is there so that you don't have to go through the entire thing again in the next region. Which, IMO, is rather boring because the rest of the game becomes way too easy that way. It is made for casual players who can't handle taking on matched mob and boss fights very well and thus tend not to enjoy that aspect.
Aside from the fact it is still buggy and unbalanced, the unlock mod is an okay temporary workaround, I guess, but the longevity of the game will suffer for you and those who use the mod will probably get bored with it pretty quickly. Use it if you want a shorter more casual experience. If you want the challenge of matched fights and you like starting over in new places then avoid it.
Easiest way to get gear and weapons is to find a town, talk to everyone, go do level 1 or 2 star quests, and normally you'll get at least 2 items that bump you up with some leftovers to identify. I've not had a problem yet and on my 4th region.
Anyways, one pretty fast way is to craft the highest level gear you can craft (depending on crafting books and resources) and then hit mobs/quests of the same power level or one level above that, especially when comes to normal mobs, kill everything of the same power level as you, even if they don't drop loot for you, the loot they drop can be sold to get gold for gear at the shops.
You aren't going to get better gear any other way than to rely on the RNG-based drop rate. Atleast crafting and buying are reliable. And it is only really tedious when all of the challenge is removed and all you are left with is a fetch quest. Starting over in each new region makes you practice your combat skills in matched battle so that you actually get better at it rather than just hitting buttons like you would if you were maxed out in Legendary gear.
Yeah maybe. All I know is that fighting a mob or boss at my current gear level has rarely disappointed me. I can nerf the battle with my Quicksand ability if the boss is melee but ranged and mage bosses require me to make potions, which takes up a lot of the duration of my stay in the region. Melee bosses one level higher means I have the right weapons to wipe out everything my level or lower about twice as quickly so that makes up for the rest of it.
And which makes more than half the game now completely redundant and that much shorter, not to mention that much more meaningless to play - the toughest mobs were made for level 6 so if you can get to level 5 with only one tier then you don't really need any of the other 3 tiers unless you're so bad at combat you need to one-shot a mob merely in order to avoid dying. Sheesh. No wonder the unlocking mod has balancing issues.
Anyone who wants an idle walking simulator is going to find a different game, anyway. Now the casuals are turning skill-based action games into walking simulators, too
Yes I was, and yes I still do. I was lamenting the changes the mods were making to Cube World to make it into yet another completely different game, this time easier than both vanilla versions.
I was also (mostly) joking when I made that post. Mods are fine as long as you know what you are doing. Not my cup of tea, but whatever.
Not really "meaningless" but rather pointless. Many games can be quite meaningful if they affect you in the right way but their only purpose is to let you have fun. If they can't even do that then there is really no reason why anyone should bother with them. The joke was that - by taking all the fun of challenging myself out of Cube World - those two mods have ceased to make it much of an actual game (to me). Which is why I would question playing it unless you like a walking simulator with nice scenery. And nice music. But that is just me. Some people love walking simulators.
EDIT: Added two words.
