tips to progress?

I have quite some time in game but I never progress further after certain and same point of the game. Usually it was my defense that lost the sectors but also small buildings for ammo supply/power supply, I usually built main and huge factories. I used all the space I could and buildings were tightly packed. Tell me how to improve to progress, thanks in advance.

@bojianh wrote v6 campaign common Q&A for v6 but a lot of his tips apply to v7. Anuken changed resources around so some of the tips on where to get e.g. early titanium no longer apply. I've not seen anything as detailed written for v7.
