If they still are, then you might be able to self-destruct them with a hotkey, I'm not sure. You also could pilot them into the landing zone to get them destroyed all in a group, but the sector needs to be under attack still. You could also blow them up with blast compound in a vault or even a thorium reactor meltdown, if you have that stuff unlocked.
If one used units for defense (which I never do), that might be a convenient way to have a unit reserve. But you can also add conveyor sections to unclog your factory. The only thing is, I'm not certain this works with fliers.
A steam generator will explode violently if fed with blast compound.
