Changing your personal ship

Can you change your personal ship? I know you get a diffrent one depending on which core section you use, but was wondering if you can change it furthur

if you ctrl click on a higher level core, if you're on a map with multiple cores, you can get a higher level ship

has a list of available units. All your ships are in it, and there are none others. So my guess is that you can`t change it further.
But you can temporary exchange it for any of those units, if that unit is currently available (built).
