Frustrated
I find this really funny and frustrating. After the Changelog Patch my ♥♥♥ game became a constant crash machine. Not even progressing past the "WARNING" screen.
I was told that, well Win 7 just will not support the Ren'Py 7.4.10 version. That's it's just "normal technological progress. Microsoft won't support GL 3 on Win 7 because that OS is no longer supported. You are at the end of the life cycle with your laptop unfortunately."
Well that's a load of crap. Are you getting a kick back from Microsucs or Intel or maybe Nvidia.
After tweaking the 'config.py' file I got it to run like a champ right up to a library scene save which I have noticed others complaining about crashes at the library scenes. This tells me it is not on "my end."
One of the biggest things I see is Dr Pink Cakes lack of dedication to your market and fan base. You released this game back when having the latest and greatest was not a problem.
You tell people to re-install the game and it does absolutely nothing but make you wait hours to see the same problems.
How many new folks are going to get suckered in by this because the requirements still showing on Steam are:

MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7 or higher
Processor: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: OpenGL 2.0 or DirectX 9.0c compatible
Storage: 6 GB available space

Yet I am told this will not run this game no more.

My laptop is 2.4 Ghz Core i3, OpenGL 2.1, DirectX 10.

Come on guys it's a simple flash card game not frackin Ghost Recon.
Why you could not have made it backward compatible is beyond me.
A little more effort at that and a lot of people would be a lot happier.

The engine and game itself are two separate things and your inability to tell the difference between the two is a you problem, not a platform problem.

Just change to Linux. Problem solved.

I understand your frustration, and I've tried to help you despite you being rude to me and staff on multiple occasions.

These are the system requirements per the game engine developer's website:
https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/build.html
Windows Version: Windows Vista or higher. CPU: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo RAM: 2.0 GB Graphics: OpenGL 2.0 or DirectX 9.0c

As you can see, it's identical to what's on the store page.

Furthermore, you can read about your issues here:

https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/problems.html
Dealing With Display Problems On Startup Ren'Py requires that your computer has functioning graphics acceleration hardware, such as a GPU or a CPU with integrated graphics. Ren'Py will automatically choose between the following renderers, in order. These are the classic renderers that were used from Ren'Py 6.13 to Ren'Py 7.4. These may not be available in 7.4 and later games that require model-based rendering. gl: OpenGL 2.0 or greater. angle: Windows, DirectX 9 or DirectX 11. gles: OpenGL ES 3.0. These are model-based renderers present in Ren'Py 7.4 and later. These currently exist to enable new features, and are expected to become the default renderer in the future. gl2: OpenGL 2.0 or greater. angle2: Windows, DirectX 9 or DirectX 11. gles2: OpenGL ES 3.0. Older versions of Ren'Py supported a software renderer, but this has been removed. A small fraction of systems may experience problems when running hardware accelerated Ren'Py games. These problems are often due to buggy graphics drivers, and so your first step to fixing them should be to check for an update to your graphics card drivers. If upgrading your video drivers does not fix the problem, you should consider switching video renderers, using the following steps. Hold down Shift while starting Ren'Py, or press Shift+G once Ren'Py has started. From the "Graphics Acceleration" menu that appears, choose the renderer to use. Choose "Quit", then restart Ren'Py. We suggest trying the GL and ANGLE renderers. The GLES renderers may not function on desktop hardware.

That's the current knowledge we have and can use to help players with similar issues.
I'm not the game engine developer, I use the tools I'm given and the upgrade of Ren'Py was needed, as experienced by thousands of Patrons enduring bugs throughout development.

Something Steam users were spared from was really bad out of memory issues caused by the game size and the previous Ren'Py version.
Without the 64-bit upgrade, this forum would have been full of thousands of players with even more issues that the current state.

It's a shame that you've been affected, and we are trying our best to help you, but we can't do magic, only provide knowledge to the best of our abilities.

The main challenge here is that Windows 7 only supports up to Open GL 2. Microsoft dropped support for Win7 on Jan 14, 2020 (now 2 years ago).

If the laptop was running win10 (which supports OpenGL 3), then you wouldn't have even experienced a problem.

I know it's frustrating when you have what you feel is perfectly good hardware that can't run a game because of support issues, but taking it out on the dev isn't really fair or constructive. Programs and tools they use get upgraded all the time without any say on their end, and they have to deal with it.

The simple truth is Microsoft sunseted support for Win 7 over a year ago, and it's not reasonable to expect devs to program to legacy software.

There being different levels/gradients of something so, doesn't exactly automatically mean you're in the clear.

It's not something the folks here can help with beyond what's already been done. There's nothing positive to be gained by continuing to be rude - certainly not in a situation where you're operating on other people's goodwill.

The situation's clear - it's something you need to change on your end (which you'll want to anyway, and sooner rather than later, with Win 7 having been dead in the water for a few years now).

I'm experiencing the same issues here. Library scene (with her husband) after doing the Josy/Maya line... and Jill. Win 10, Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB RAM, GTX 980, SSDs, all updates and drivers installed. I told it to verify game files. Still happens. Crash to desktop.

... Also if it is relevant, I played through on the Sage line. No crashes

End of extended support for windows 7 was, if memory serves, 1/14/21, right along with Windows server 2008 R2. The death of Windows 7 has been a long time coming. Hell, Windows 11 is on the horizon, if it's not out already. Can't expect an OS to be supported/stay relevant forever.

Would suggest upgrading to a newer PC with at least windows 10. BaD is bound to be one among many games you'll find yourself unable to play before long, if you're not having issues already

I'm locking this thread as any new reports of crashes should be on its own.
