... although I'd probably have to restart eventually anyway.
That's unfortunate <_< not that I want to disappoint you, but we're getting ready to release a feature that's been missing from the MSQ - the Obelisks aren't meant to be completed that easily
There's a lot of writing present in the MSQ that doesn't have completed content yet; all of the discussion about offerings made to the gods (about to be released), the sprite asks you to feed it to power it up to get it to learn skills (not yet released), Nobu asks you to upgrade tools before heading to Desert Canyon (not yet released), and there are 3 other biome mines and biome quests that aren't yet released.
Personally, I think starting another playthrough for this update is worth, especially if you were a player that felt like the story was a little too fast and didn't do much with the other systems in the game. This update adds a LOT of progression and integration with rest of the systems in the game, primarily farming and town building
Sorry by which I mean- can I start a new save file now, leave story stuff incomplete (other than the first obelisk which locks off the mines it seems) and continue properly once the update is out?
Yep!
Saves that were already progressed through the MSQ should be compatible with the changes to the MSQ, you just can't go backward in progress, meaning anyone who has already finished the old MSQ will have to start a new file to be able to play through the new MSQ content.
Honestly restarting is making me pick up on things that I missed the first time, like that charging tools actually saves stamina. I was wondering why early game I was having to go to bed so early!
