Tree chomping factory?

Picked up a quest from the eye to cut down the trees nearby, i have some deer that i thought would eat the trees, but thats not the case? any advise?

Had this problem too - definitely not obvious that this is the obstacle.

I agree with the above statement. The conversation implies that it gives you everything you need to complete this. Completed the station quest before completing the supply pod for the area and was frustrated by what I needed to do next.
