How to get corssbow

So, i'm new to the game and its seems very interesting and fun. I've seen the option for a crossbow but i do not know how to unlock it? any help would be great.

The game has since been updated. You need to find a total of 8 journal pages to unlock the crossbow (but cartographer pages are also included in that count now, so it should take about the same amount of time).
