Why are they so disturbingly ugly? Why is this a trend now to make the most disturbingly odd characters possible?

It's just odd that you have to "work" to get a "decent" one. It ends up either feeling lazy or deliberate and either way I'm confused. I've LOVED the aesthetics of their other games but.. I just don't know what happened here. The Initial loading screen has art of characters I'd trade all the current options for just ONE of.

Its part of uncanny valley. Its not a deliberate effort to make them ugly, but rather that more realistic looking humans can look very unsettling if they are in the middle of "clearly a cartoon" and "clearly a human" in terms of looks.

I fear we're playing two very different games if what makes the characters ugly is "uncanny valley" to you. They don't even approach that, the game is entirely too stylized for that to be a factor.
