Do I misunderstand grievances?

When renouncing a grievance that the computer has told me I have (for example, being at peace with an enemy), I get a flippant response from the other ruler. This is even if we've been otherwise cordial with each other. It seems like a bit out of left field. Why does the AI act randomly stand-offish like that?

It seems that the check for the response is a bit too strict, there's a level at which they'll sound grateful for revoking grievances, but most of the time they'll go 'pffft, up yours', even when otherwise friendly. It doesn't really change anything, it's just jarring.
