Can the bad parts be fixed with mods?
I had high hopes for this game but was put off when it released and people started giving it negative reviews. It's been a while now, people say the game has improved but still has major issues, but most of the bad reviews say it has good potential if those major issues are fixed.

Now that modders have had some time to fiddle with it, would any of you experienced players say that there are mods available that fix the games biggest issues?

- unbalanced mechanics and nations,

You can use a balance mod such as https://humankind.old.mod.io/vanilla-improvement-project, https://humankind.old.mod.io/hk-overhaul or https://humankind.old.mod.io/sirius-game-rebalance

- the pollution mechanic,
You can entirely disable it on the game's menu, or use a mod that rebalances it like https://humankind.old.mod.io/vanilla-improvement-project or https://humankind.old.mod.io/extended-naval-combat

- and that combat is very flawed.
What you despise on combat? I don't think you can change the base mechanics but they're great IMHO. If the problem is on the base combat balance a balancing mod such as https://humankind.old.mod.io/vanilla-improvement-project can help; if the problem is you wanting more content (such as units) then an expansion such as https://humankind.old.mod.io/extended-naval-combat can help. If you'd rather like to change some of the underlying mechanics then https://humankind.old.mod.io/revised-unit-combat is the best call (this requires Bepinex)

- I'm also not a fan of the whole "highest score wins" thing with the era stars. Much prefer a separate victory path system like in CIV. But that one's not a deal breaker.

This one may help you then: https://humankind.old.mod.io/famescoring . It does not changes the fact that you need the highest score to win, but it changes how the score is dealt to the players. It also require Bepinex

- Oh, and a few reviews I saw said diplomacy it terrible

I don't think any of the mods change how diplomacy fundamentally works, but there are some rebalances to it (like adding costs to some agreements) in https://humankind.old.mod.io/vanilla-improvement-project . Again, I personally don't think it is terrible, but it may need some time to get used.

It depends on what you see as "the bad parts". Modding scene has done wonders IMHO to the game's playability, with extra content, balancing and alternate ways to play. It can't changed some fundamentals like the culture swapping mechanic and the simultaneous turns game flow. So it depends on what turned you off to know if the "bad parts" can be fixed or not with mods.

The complaints I've seen that concerned me the most were about unbalanced mechanics and nations, the pollution mechanic, and that combat is very flawed. The combat is one of the things I looked forward to the most, since CIV combat has always felt like a chore to me with moving all the separate units around every turn.

Oh, and a few reviews I saw said diplomacy it terrible. I love me a good forever war, but I do also like being able to have somewhat logical diplomatic interactions with the AI. Not that many games manage to pull that off, though. Like how in CIV 6 all the AIs hate you forever after you burn down a single poorly placed forward settled AI city in the early game before you even met most of the other civs. That was really annoying but I fixed it with a few mods.

The mods can rebalance but not fix the underlying poorly thought-out systems. I tried. You can have some fun if you don't look too closely at how any of it works, but go tryhard and it quickly becomes apparent that the game's economy is just a pile of reactionary rubberband mechanics with no throughline.
