They don't, it's a trick of the visual style. The shading is harsh and reminiscent of broad stroke oil paint, which the brain can interpret as "age".

I do agree the default avatar was horrible. The tutorial game made me use it even though I made my own oddly. I saved and reloaded the next day though and it switched to the avatar I made. Was odd.

This. The art style isn't exactly appealing, especially for female characters (I find beards can cover up the worst of it), and I wouldn't mind seeing a change, but I would certainly *hope* there aren't too many players who bought a 4X game just to ogle the avatars. Then again, if you browse the Steam Workshop of other games...

Not gonna lie, female models are ugly as heck! you can try and do one somewhat decent looking but i say somewhat because it is ugly no matter what, the eyes suck the nose a bit and the headshape only 1 is somewhat prettier looking and its really hiden

also lets be honest hairstyle choices not so good either, we need more long hair styles or medium but there are too many short hairs

You are only limited to one though, which is a shame, I had a lot of ideas of Avatars I would have put in. On the topic female avatars, I don't think they look that bad. One of the Streamers personas looks really ugly, but then again I don't think the actual person is that attractive either, and one of them (Lucy) is an ape that they have made into a human, she's basically a reverse fursona.

Because of BCE? I have always prefered BCE, we don´t need silly religious datings.. I would rather say.. if that is woke, then I am woke.
